My freezer won't stay cold enough to keep food frozen.
It is a hotpoint side by side. It occasionally, gets cold enough, but then warms up again. I developed a big chunk of ice on the back and outside wall, will goes through periods of melting, then getting bigger. I can't trust putting any food in here, because it spoils quickly.
Re: My freezer won't stay cold enough to keep food...
I had this problem about a year ago with mine. You need to replace the heating element located at the bottom of the freezer. It's behind a plate that you can remove after loosening a couple of screws. This heating element defrosts the freezer. When it goes bad it allows ice to form over the coils and then the freezer actually warms up. It's around $30 and an easy fix. You just need to unplug a couple of wires and put the new one in.

There could be a large list of things that cause the freezer to warm up from the temperature it was before. The most likely reason is you probably have a defrost problem. Defrost heater, defrost thermostat and the defrost control are all things that may have failed. If your model is not a frost free let me know. Look inside freezer for a layer of frost building on the rear wall. If your refrigerator is not defrosting it will be a short time before the fresh food compartment begins to warm. To extend the time your refrigerator and freezer can keep food safe defrost by placing a bucket of hot water inside the freezer and close the door. Please place food from freezer and fresh food compartment into another refrigerator or cold storage area. By keeping doors shut as much as possible the refrigerator and freezer will last up to a week this way before defrosting again, Sea Breeze
Refrigerators do not work correctly in the winter in unconditioned space. It is too cold for the unit to run normally. The compressor oil gets sluggish and strains the compressor when it does run. The thermostat never warms enough for the unit to come on and run. Therefore the temperatures in fresh food and freezer stay at the top end of the set point. This would cause about 42-43 in fresh food and around 18-25 in the freezer. In the spring time it should start running correctly again.
If the defrost thermostat is bad it can prevent the heater from
coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped
to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be
misshapen it is bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity when
cold and none when warm. You can also bypass the thermostat to see if the
heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs
If, the fresh food section is 34- 38 degrees, then the freezer should be cold enough to keep ice cream solid. All of the cooling capability comes from the freezer section. I, personally, would not waste time or money on a ten year old box. Ten years ago it cost $1000, so, the outlay is $100 per year. Dump the old refrigerator and get a new one.
Sounds like a main control board problem keeping the freezer fan from working . If no air flow to the top of the freezer , the icemaker will stop working and the ice will begin to melt ( leaking from freezer ) . The coils will start to freeze up due to no air flow across them . If continued for a period of time , the cold air could return thru the return vent located in the bottom of the ref/freezer section and freeze the water tank in the refrig section , causing the no water thru dispensor .
This is normal the red light tells you that there is a slight of decreased in coldness .Eventually the red light will disappear after the refrigerator has recollected it's coldness... in 24 hours approximately .....Jack Arevian.(.Aleppo Syria).Refrigeration Engineer...........
