Sony KP 51WS510 convergence problem

Hi,

I've checked the pico fuses(PF80001 ~ PF80006), they all show ~ 5 ohm, seems ok. (my ohm meter probes pos & neg touched showed 5 ohm).

And I also checked two TPs(+22V and -22V), the +22V showed +32V and the -22V showed -6V ...

Any idea ?

Should I replace a new "D" board ? but I don't know how to remove the two red wires(they seem for high voltages, and they connect to a gray plastics box and the box soldered to the board)

Thanks
Steven

    Hi,

After double checking, still no luck. I'd decide to replace the D board, do you know where I can find the D board ?

And how to remove the two thick red wires ? (they seem for high voltages, and they
connect to a gray plastics box and the box soldered to the board)

    Thanks
    Steven

Hey man, I have some possible solutions for you, I had a similar problem.  Can you please e-mail me at mikesgravity@gmail.com?
We can chat.
Also, I would REALLY REALLY appreciate it if you could give me a few service menu values your TV displays.  I have an idiot cousin who tried to converge and messed some things up and didn't write down defaults.
THANKS!

I have the service manual for this TV, so I can save anyone interested in buying it some money (I'll send it to ya for free).  Can ANYONE please help me with a few Service Menu values?  Please.

You should get service manual and new ohm meter to check parts.
If tools are no good, results will not be good in any case.

I do not compromise on tools quality.

D board replacement is so early decision. As I told you, +22 and -22 should be available in D board. If such voltages are not there, how can convergence ICs carry out the job?

Please have service manual on any online manual store and check power supply area, why +22 and -22 are not being supplied.

Pico fuses should be checked out of board or at least one pin should be unsold to test fuse.
In circuit test of fuse is not good idea and can misguide you with wrong results.

    Mikes Gravity,

best option for you to go to service menu ( you know the procedure as you have service manual) and cross-check desired item with service manual.

Now convergence data is some thing vary on every TV and one TV data can not be work correctly on other TV. Every TV requires convergence adjustment individually though its same model TV.

You will need to replace the two convergence ICs and then check and possibly replace the pico fuses on the D board and G board. The Sony number one convergence repair kit available from www.tvrepairworld.com is the correct kit for your model. The kit contains both ICs and the 8 pico fuses plus the CD with detailed repair instructions.

I have a sony widescreen projection tv model KP51WS510. the picture has shadows and shows double.

Thats caused by failed convergence ICs your model uses the STK392-560 ICs you will also need several 3.5 amp pico fuses and a couple of 5 amp pico fuses to do the repair. The Sony Type 1 convergence repair kit is the correct kit for your model. It contains the parts and the CD with repair instructions. The kits available from www.tvrepairworld.com

Did you check the two pico fuses on the G board? Usually at least one will blow when the original ICs failed. I am attaching a pic that shows the 2 pico fuses on the G board.

This set has two 5 amp fuses on power board that feed the convergence circuit, did you test them?

I needed I can provide photo of that board, fuses are pico fuses and not glass.

Let me know and I will be happy to help you.

Sony KP-51WS510 the picture is blurry, except for the center of the picture and the picture looks concaved. Sometimes it looks as if the picture is in 3D. Is this worth fixing?

You have a convergence problem very typical of rear projection tv's. This set has (2) STK392-560 IC's and there may also be a resistor or two that needs to be replaced.

<br>
I have found that on this set you need to check the pico fuses on the power supply board (there are two located parallel to each other) and on the convergence board (underneath the aluminum heat sink where the IC's are mounted).

Replace the convergence ICs and the pico fuses you can get a convergence repair kit at the following link which is for the KP46WT510 But its the same one for your model. The kit contains the two convergence Ics all six pico fuses and four resistors. Plus free step by step instructions with pictures that show how to do the repair. Heres the link to the kit.

Sony kp 51ws510 convergence problem

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.
