Question about Washing Machines

Mould on Rubber Seal and Musty Smell

I bought my Kenmore HE2 Front-Loading Automatic Washer in April/06 because supposedly they were the "be all and end all". Using less water and energy and being easier on your clothes.

The biggest problem I have is the MOLD and the MUSTY SMELL. The black mold is growing on the rubber just inside the door and I am unable to get rid of it. I was told to keep the door slightly ajar which I have done from the beginning but because of space problems cannot open it all the way (not sure if that would be a solution to this problem anyway).

I have also read to make sure you use the 2nd rinse..... well, where are the savings there????

As we speak, I am trying the bleach method as I do not usually use bleach on my clothes but after researching various websites I am not 100% sure this will be successful. I would appreciate any assistance as I simply cannot afford to go out and buy another washing machine at this time.

Bleaching hte rubber will help, you need to check your detergent, you MUST be using an HE detergent, specifically designed for frontloading machines, leaving the door open as well between usage, and running more than just cold washes, HOT water definalty far as efficincy this machine uses abouit 1/3 of hte water the top loaders do. 13-16 gal, versus 45-50 gal. so an extra rinse is not going to amount ot much. there are also products such as www.AFFRESH tabs, or even "dishwasher magic" has been known to reduced the smells/odors in oyour washer

My washer has a mildow smell and my clothes smell musty, especially towels!

This is a comin in all front loaders. It it caused by two things not using HE soap and keeping the door closed when not using it. The only way to get rid of the smell is to run 3 to 5 cycles with bleach and no clothes or use a washer cleaner. Most large hardware stores carry them. Once the smell is gone be sure to leave the door open when you are not using it and wipe out the gray boot(gasket/seal) after using.

Kenmore HE2 front load washer

Stay away from front load washing machines as they have too many problems and too many expensive electrical parts such as the door lock part that my tech. changed with no results $140.00 plus central control unit (ccu) which costs around $300.00 not to mention the unit on the underside of the top panel that runs the full width of the machine "like a mother board on a computer" I have no idea what that is worth but it sure looks very expensive and there are more components that if you look at the failure/error display code they start at F01 and run right up to F34 that to me is a sign that there are too many problems for one washer. Also the large rubber gasket that seals the door has to be maintained or you could get mould and a ransid smell in the machine and on your cloths. Just a warning by top load not as many problems

Maytag front load washer - smell musty

the water in the unit is normal, to kill the smell when you are done doing wash for the day dampen a rag with bleach and whip down the door gasket. You can buy a cleaner called "afresh" it works as well. If your unit is a neptune check with maytag it might have a recall on the door gasket for growing mould

Clothes have a musty smell if left in the washer

Make shure to do a cleaning cycle. As well, wipe out the inside, the rubber gasket and the door when done washing for the day. We also have found that
leaving the door "Open" for several hours, when finnished, eliminates any future

Mold & Smelly in Washer

On August 29, 2007, SFMS filed a Complaint against Sears Holding Corp. involving its Kenmore HE, HE2, HE3, HE4, HE5 and other front-loading automatic washers. If you own a front-loading washing machine that is manufactured by any of the above-mentioned companies and are experiencing the growth of mold/mildew in the machine, visit the following website:
