I have the same problem. It's brand new. I've charged it with a 120v to USB charging adapter, the same for my phone, pda, bluetooth headset - anything with mini-usb. I've tried charging it OFF, and ON for 3+ hours each time. As soon as I unplug it, the battery level goes from FULL to ONE bar, and then within 10min, it will auto-power off on batteries.

    I'm going to return it.

I found there are select 120v AC adapters that will work on Magellan GPS. When a working 120v or 12v adapter to mini USB adapter is plugged into the unit, the battery bars will be 'scrolling' and therefore charging.

When your adapter, or even USB cable from your computer, is plugged into the GPS unit, and the battery goes to FULL, it is NOT CHARGING. The battery bars must be SCROLLING for the unit to charge. In this case, get a different adapter until it works.

I have the same problem and I just fixed mine. The stupid at magellan soldered the USB port to the board using sideways solder joints, without a "stop" for the back of the USB port, so every time you plug in the USB, you are stressing the solder joints which eventually fail. (1) get a tiny micro screwdriver and pull out the 4x plugs on the back which cover the screws, (2) unscrew the 4 screws on the back, (3) using a midsized or larger micro screwdriver, pull off the back, (4) using your thumb, press down on the micro USB port and plug in the charge cable, mine came on right away with my thumb pressing the 4 solder connections down, (5) use a soldering iron to reflow the joint.

Gps shuts off regularly

From what I've experienced, repeated restarting, and frequent shut downs, can be traced back to a defective power cord, and/or a low battery state. Garmins operate best with a full battery charge, regardless their connection to external power.
If you can get it to connect to your computer, and can see it as a device with removable storage, right clicking on it's icon, and select "properties" to show you the battery-charge state detected.
Mine won't charge when connected to the computer for some reason, and won't boot even if left for a few hours, but if I connect it to a dedicated usb charger, (the kind that plugs into an A/C outlet with a USB port) it will begin to charge. After fully charging it returns to normal operational state. If it still can't charge it may need a new battery...

Charging problem

If the internal battery won't charge, then the battery is likely defective. Contact Garmin to find out your options. Whether still under warranty or not, they can usually repair it for less than the cost of replacing it. They're a good company with a good reputation for customer service.

My garmin will not turn back on

First make sure that it is fully charged. Try a soft reset by sliding the power switch to the left and holding for at least 10 seconds.

Common problem with this model is a defective USB port that prevents the battery from being charged or powering the unit with the DC charger.

I have 765T Garmin. It won't charge from cigarette lighter. REturned first Garmin to company, got a "newly refurbished" unit, so it's different. Still won't charge from car. Cable lights up,...

if its an oem garmin charger and the green light is on and still wont charge, then the problem is most likely the power port on the back of your garmin...if its not the factory charger, get one for a garmin..that should solve your problem...if not, let me know

let me know if you need more help or info

My garmin nuvi 265 will keep shutting down and rebooting while being used. any suggestions, it is just over 1 year old and this happens whether on battery power or if connected to DC power

I can help you reset and fix your Garmin Nuvi 265W.

Getting stuck on the flashing Garmin logo, or a message about not finding any maps, or freezing and rebooting, are indications that the firmware / system software inside your GPS has been corrupted.

There are three steps to take to get your Nuvi 265W running like new:

  1. Back up your Favorites.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset.
  3. Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

I hope that helps.

Good Morning, My sat nav has turned it's sefl off and wont come back on .....! Any ideas ..... Regards, Lee.

If you have an AC to DC eliminator (adapter) for this unit try to switch it on while this adapter is connected. May need to keep the power on button pressed for 2 or 3 seconds. Also check whether there is fuse in the cable that runs from your cigarette lighter plug to the GPS. If there is one, check whether it is a blown fuse. If there is a multimeter available check the voltage at the tip of the cable. If all these seems to be alright, and if this is a very old unit, check whether you can open this unit and replace the battery. Most chances are that the battery is dead, or it is not charging.

When not plugged into auto or outside power, when turned on, will

Sounds like you may have a defective battery. I think that particular device will need to be returned to the manufacturer to have the battery replace.

My garmin nuvi will work on battery power but will not work if attached to charger.

what charger? AC or DC? You need to give more specific information. If it's the DC charger, check for a blown fuse in the charger or a fuse for your cigrarette lighter socket. The AC charger is non-user servicable and will need to be replaced if it's defective.

Had the same problem. Called Support. They answered immediately - a HUMAN, no recording, speaking American English - walked me through some tests, diagnosed a defective battery, gave me info on returning unit, I had it back in a flash. This is a classy outfit, and the Garmin C330 is a superb piece of equipment, has been flawless since.

Roadmate 1412

We did not get a solution in the chat room. So we returned the unit to Costco and things are fine with the new unit although the return guy seem surprised that the fault could be in the unit itself. Thanks anyway.. Do we get that refund?
