Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

Door Hums but won't open

You addressed a similar problem earlier. Symptom: hit the remote and the door motor hums for a second, light flashes 5 times repeatedly. Called my regular serviceguys and they said its likely a lightning surge requiring a new circuitboard. Actually have same problem with 2 doors, one happening 2 days after the other. In both cases the chainstop ran into the checkbolt and got a little lodged. I freed it but, still have the problem. Still recommend replacing gear drives?

Drive gears not causing this problem. usually when trolley lodges against bolt, you take out bolt, reset up travel a little, put bolt back in and it never happens again.

Motor has overheated; the motor unit does not operate or trolleyis stuck on stop bolt = Motor unit hums briefly; RPM Sensor =Short travel 6-8" (15-20 cm).• Unplug unit to reset. Try to operate motor unit, check diagnostic code.• If it is still flashing 5 times and motor unit moves 6-8" (15-20 cm), replace RPMsensor.• If motor unit doesn't operate, motor unit is overheated. Wait 30 minutes andretry. If motor unit still will not operate replace logic board.

The garage door hums for a few seconds and then stops, the door won't go up or down.

Make sure the trolley isn't jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor.

It sounds like your door sensors may be misaligned. If when you try to close the door the main light flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position this is the case. Make sure the small light on each sensor is lit and not flickering. Tweak the sensors to see if you can get both lights to come on. If not you have a bad sensor.

Door will not open with wall switch or remote

Depending on the type of motor that is used in your garage door opener, it could be something as small as a start capacitor, or potentially a bad motor. Hope this helps

Motor hums but nothing happens

I just had the same problem. Extreme cold, garage door stops working, motor hums, same here. I opened up the my garage door opener(after unplugging it), and found that the wormwheel had a wear spot on it. This is the gear that allows the motor to raise and lower the garage door. Any way, after the wife "sugested" that the door was too heavy to lift, I went and bought a new garage door lifter. But if you are handy dandy with tools, I have seen the wormwheel for sale here. http://www.aaaremotes.com/gearsprocask.html It's the plastic wheel that went bad on me. If I would have found this before buying the garage door opener, I would have got the sprocket assembly. I hope this helps!

Liftmaster 1/3 HP - humming, but does not open.

It's the gear drive. There are kits online for about $40, if you're semi-handy you can replace it yourself. Search for liftmaster replacement parts.
