Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Sent my control panel in for repair - did you receive it?

I sent my control panel in for repair over two weeks ago and was wondering if you'd received it. My name is Joy Norton, the microwave is a GEJVM240.
If you have received it, can you fix it and when will I get it back?

Thanks.

here's the description of the problem, and your suggestion:

When shut the door on the microwave, the light goes on, the fan starts running, (but nothing heats up - I put a cup of water in, and it remained cold). Try hitting clear, and it the fan continues running. Try hitting kitchen timer, then number, like 8, 0, 0, and the numbers appear on the display, but when I touch start, nothing happens, start doesn't cause the usual beep. Same thing when I hit a cook time and start.

The "main" relay on the control circuit board is stuck (shorted) and needs to be replaced.

Control panel not working

If "control panel not working" means no display, clock not on, etc. but the interior light comes on when the door is opened(power is being received and transmitted from transformer\rectifier) I would check to see if power is being received by control panel(with a multimeter, checking for voltage at the input terminals). If it is receiving power but not working, the "repair clinic" on the internet is a great place to look for replacement parts.

Lights don't work

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week.

At our Web site, you can get details of our service, plus we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

Down lights/night light not working

It's not the fuse. If the fuse is blown, the oven will be totally dead with no display, etc.

Sometimes this will also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Beware of this place, microwavedisplay.com. Of late, some are seeing very long turn around times. They don't respond to emails or answer the phone. See http://www.whoila.com/blog/?p=725 for some recent experiences.

"mute"

Assuming this is indeed your correct model number, I did not see any reference to the word "MUTE" in the manual! If you don't have the manual, you can download it in PDF format here: http://tinyurl.com/yjmhbq If you actually have a different model number, please reply to this post with your correct model. GE/Hotpoint probably directed you to press the "HELP" key and see if there is a useful option in the help menus. I would suggest diconnecting the power from the oven via the cord or breaker for a few minutes, then plugging it back in. Sometimes they sort of get their brains scrambled and neds a good reset. If that doesn't fix it, I would suspect trouble with your control panel. We repair the control panels for $32.50 nationwide, but your take on typical in-home service and replacement costs are pretty accurate. I would wonder if an excessive amount of moisture may have gotten into the controls... That can happen when you boil on the stove top without having the hood / exhaust fan running. It can also occur if one sprays a cleaner directly on the keypad instead of just wiping it with a soft, damp cloth. But that can often be repaired, too. Once you've digested this information, fel fre to post back and we can take it from there.

Shuts off, must reset clock

Sounds like you could have a fauly control circuit. Something like when you press the pad the processor does not interpret the information correctly and resets itself. Or the power going to this circuit is being interupted. It is VERY dangerous to work inside of a microwave. So you could get an estimate from a repair shop. But those control boards are expensive. Do not attempt to repair this yourself. For your own safety.
