To access these dryers you open the door and look up at the 12 oclock position and their will either be 2 or 4 screws holding down the top. These must be removed and then you can get the top to come up(or off on newer models). Once you have the top up you can get to the screws which hold the front on (2). Then you simply remove the front and get it out of your way. On these dryers there is a friendly rear hatch to help you replace the idler. The new belts routing is:

First check to see that the exhaust venting line is clear (not full of lint) as well as the path in the dryer to the line. This is the most common cause of no heat.
Second set the knob to heat turn on dryer with the lights off and the door open but the "open door" switch so that it still rotates with the door open. Look at the back of the rotating drum for a orange/red glow behind the drum (the heater coils). If there is no glow the heater coils are probably broken.
As the dryers age, the amount of thermal cycles the heater elements go through until the point when the coil wire breaks. There usually two heater coils behind the rotating drum (one hotter than the other and when combined the hottest heat temperature setting. You will need to pop open the top where you see the belt that turns the drum. The belt is removed from the spring loaded tensioner pulley at the base of the dryer. Then you can lift the drum out to get to the heater coils. Since no heat, both should be broken and will require replacement.

I HAVE A GE DRYER THE MOTOR SHUTS OFF WHEN YOU RELEASE THE START BUTTON AND THE DRUNM WONT ROTATE

there's a broken belt switch connected to the belt idler pulley,(when this belt breaks the switch opens) located down by the motor and it kills the power to the dryer when the belt breaks so the heating element cant get the clothes too hot to burn the clothes when the drum cannot rotate properly

Check the "Bias thermostat" for continuity with a multimeter. IF it is bad, replace with this part.

How to replace ge dryer heating element

you will need to remove the drum for this one.  once it is out, the element is mounted on the back of the unit.  not a hard repair, just lay out the parts as you take it apart to give you some order as you re-assemble it.

My dryer is making a funny noise, like there is friction on the drum and the back is unusually hot.

GE has some gliders the drum turns on they are teflon and wear out. When they do it will start rubbing and making noise. The drum don't turn as easy as it should. G E is very bad about this sometimes it will wear into the plastic that holds the durm up and the whole thing has to be replaced. I wouldn't buy a G E old ones are ok.

Dryer not heating

ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANY WORK ON IT.
Check to make sure you are getting full 220 Volt power to the dryer, if you are then:
Sounds like your problem may be with the heating coil. Remove the back of the machine and try to
locate the air duct going from the blower to the drum. Normally inside the air duct you will find
the heating coil and the thermostats/thermistor. Once you have located the heating coil, remove
the two wires from it and check the coil with an ohm meter across the two terminals of the coil.
You should read continuity across the terminals, if not you will need to replace the coil as it
is faulty. If the heating coil is ok, then: You can check the thermostat/thermistor by removing
the two wires and taping them together with electrical tape. If the coil heats up then replace
the thermostat/thermistor. DO NOT LEAVE THE WIRES TAPED TOGETHER AFTER THE TEST. This could cause
a fire, as you have removed the safety of overheat from the machine. I will include these two web
sites for parts and further help:

Both also have chat assistance 24/7.
Good Luck, Hope this helps
