Cannot control cursor with mouse; cannot highlight with mouse

After 3 months using Word 2007 on new laptop, all of a sudden I cannot use the mouse to move the cursor. That means I cannot highlight a portion of text to make changes, etc. Have no idea why this happened or how to correct it. Any ideas?

I'm using Toshiba Satellite A205-S5843. Mouse/cursors works in other software and internet applications; just not in Word2007

Thanks but the touchpad is enabled already. I checked and double-checked.

Steve, I have exactly the same problem with Word 2007 & an HP Pavilion laptop. The mouse works fine in all aother applications (inc. other Office apps).
    In Word:

    • the mouse pointer moves around screen but will not control cursor.

    • the mouse will select icons on the ribbon.

    • the mouse will not let me change Word Option sub menus but will let me change options in the visible sub menu.

    • Touch pad is on & external mouse does not work either
Any suggestions gratefully welcome! Janine Martin

It sounds like you hit either the switch or the key combo that shuts off the touch pad, I had a guy yesterday whose cat did the same thing to his, look for the switch mine is on the laptop sensor on my hp pavillion 9700, if you can't figure what you hit type in the model name and number and I will fin it for you

try this I foud it online I believe the other guy har to push f9 and either alt or control, here is a link describing the same thing

The touchpad and external mouse drivers should be able to work together. Just make sure that you have the touchpad enabled. To see if you have the touchpad enabled, hold the Fn key and press F9. The combination Fn-F9 locks and unlocks the touchpad. If pressing Fn-F9 once, twice, thrice does not seem to lock/unlock your touchpad.. then you might not have the Toshiba hotkeys working or enabled. So lets forget it and try step 2. If Fn-F9 solved your problem.. there you go !

Run an 'adware' scan , you can find the adware here,, or smarthackerz. com, you may have to join , but it.s free, there are many programs that can be used to scan for malware. That is what it sounds like you have. There were 25 or so infections in my browser alone and I run 3 seperate programs to scan anything that is incoming or outgoing, last week there was a security alert for internet explorer, most of the techs switched browsers, and a patch is available from msft. you can also try spybot,"search and destroy" which is another freeware program that has helped millions of people over the years, I would try that one first as ig doesn't ask you to join or anything, make sure you get it from the real page as there are hundreds of lookalike websites who attempt charging for a donation based freeware utility. Please download the newest updates before running it, good luck, it sounds like there is a bug loose in your machine, Gym

I had this problem, on vista and reappeared when I rebuilt with windows 7, definitely not the trackpad or virus. Turned out to be Adobe contribute add in for Word.
Easy to fix. It has to do with the add-in's

1. Click on Start Run winword.exe /a (start word in Safe Mode)
2. Click on the office button top left. On the bottom go to word options then to add ins.
3. Select the comm add-ins and go
4. Uncheck Adobe Contribute add-in.
5. Close word and restart.

In order to run word as admin and with the switch, I created a desktop shortcut.

My son did something to my computer and now the mouse does not move the cursor. How can I fix this? I have XP.

1) Is it wireless? Check batteries/re-synchronize.
2) Check the plug/connector at the mouse port on the back of the computer-loose/unplugged?
3) Broken mouse? Try plugging in a different mouse-one you know works.(New optical mice are relatively inexpensive-$10 or so)

If nothing above helps, use ARROW keys, TAB button and ENTER button to move around, and do the following:

go to windows START(lower left corner)
go to system
go to device manager

Now find your device MOUSE (yellow triangle indicates error)

Open your mouse ("Mice and other pointing devices")

On the first Tab GENERAL, it should say if the device is working properly or not.

You can DISABLE the mouse on the second Tab DRIVER, see if he disabled it. (You can enable it.)

Hope this helps.

One way to do it is to type a series of letters (they don't have to make any sense at all.

Next, highlight the entire series of letters, right click and choose hyperlink. In the box that comes up, type the text you want displayed on the mouse-over and hot OK.

Next, highlight the entire string of text again and change the color of the font to white. The entire string ox characters will disappear, yet everytime you mouse-over, the text you want displayed will be seen in a small popup box.

Hi Rakesh,
in MS Access 2003/2007, the first record is always highlighted in table as well form's text controls when they connected to a database. In a query cursor is always at last record.

In flex-grid control you can set its properties to get cursor on a particular records.

I think your problem is solved.

Please contact if not.

Couple of suggestions:

1) try holding the ctrl key and rolling the mouse wheel down.
2) open the message in it's own window, click Other Actions, select zoom from the menu, choose desired zoom level and click ok
3) If using a previous version of MS word, change outlook from using word as your email editor to outlook as the email editor (TOOLS | OPTIONS | MAIL FORMAT tab)

How to enter same item in the same invoice?

If you highlight the section with your mouse (left button hold and drag across) the information you want repeated, then press CTRL+C (control C = copy), when you get to the next area you want that information, move the cursor there, either by tabs or mouse, and press CTRL+V (control V=paste).  That will allow you to copy and paste information that is used over and over.  It will work with most programs running under Windows (and Linux too!)
Hope this helps you out!
