At startup it reads BOOTMGR is missing can it be fixed if yes how?

You will need a operating system disk or a repair disk to fix it. Insert it in the drive then boot from it. You want to get to a dos command prompt (black screen with white lettering) and type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
bootrec.exe /fixmbr
bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd

Reboot and see if the problem is solved. If not get back to the dos command prompt and run the check disk utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc or a operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot from it. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with white letters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice the percentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run to completion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows. Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair when the options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recovery console and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

I used active kill to format my hard disk and now when i want to install a windows it doesnot show. what should i do???

I ran into this same problem when I used a program call "diskkill". I did not know that I changed the format of the drive using this program to wipe a virus off it. So how to fix it go to and download the win98 boot disk .iso or a image create a bootable cd rom disk to reformat the corrupted drive. Have the system boot to the cd rom drive. have it boot to no ram drive. When the drive letter to the cdrom pops up, type fdisk hit enter. You are given 4 choices. press 1 enter. 3 enter it will verify drive, reboot using win 98 cdrom again no ram drive. at cdrom drive letter type format c: /s hit enter. That should will format your drive to be a fat 32bit. Reboot put your Windows disk in and let the system reformat the drive to NTFS or leave it at 32 bit, the limitation to a DOS format are 32gb.

Power is on but I cannot hear it running and computer can't see the drive

The drive could be bad. You can find out if your computer is seeing the drive if you right click on Computer for Vista or Windows 7 or My Computer for XP and go to Manage, then click on Disk Management. If the disk is being read by windows you should see something labeled as disk 1 or disk 2 depending on how many hard drives are in your computer. If the drive is being read and not being assigned a letter you can right click on the drive in disk management and assign a letter to it.

all you need to do is take the recovery CD that came with the system, isnert, reboot the system to load from DVD or CDROM. and copy the boot sector into your hard disk, C or whatever letter you have .
reboot system again, take the data installed on your HDD c letter , and create a driver letter, and then copy that data to the new drive letter.

Rescue data on optima attache 4G thumb drive?

Leave the thumbdrive plugged in to the computer and reboot.

Right click on my computer, click Manage, click on disk management, locate your thumb drive, right click and choose assign (or change) a drive letter. If it already has a drive letter, give it a different one as it’s already in use

Is this thumb drive USB specific? Some of the newer ones require a 2.0 USB port. It's possible you're plugging it into a 1.0 port.

open my computer and hit the f5 key on your keyboard for a refresh.. might not have posted.

try one or more of these

Second hard drive map letter

If this is xp- you can manually force the drive letter assignment in computer management under disk management.
right click the my computer icon, go to management. In there go to disk management. In there you will see the drives and the drive letters. Right click on the drive, and go to change drive letter and paths. Should be pretty simple from there. By default it seems that any new drives are assigned the next available letter, all the way up to Z- but you can specify the drive letter any way you like.

Disconnect the USB drive
Boot to Safe Mode (F8 at boot), then open device manager (Right Click MY Computer, Properties, hardware tab, devicemanager button) then find the USB Root hubs and delete them
Reboot in the normal mode, go back to device manager, usb root hubs, right click each, properties, power management tab, uncheck the check box to let windows power off the hub (On by default)
reboot, connect drive, see if it detects.
If it doesn't. open Disk Management (Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window appears)
and see if it is seen then but has a conflict with the drive letter.
If that doesn't resolve, try drive on another system.
