If you can't clean the connections. It is no longer supported by Hasbro. You might try a local small appliance repair shop if you have one. They may be able to clean/repair the battery holder to return it to functionality.
With a flat screwdriver (or similar) pry up the left-hand side of the blade release button. Expand the seam down the side of the lightsaber to get it to release. Inside, there is a metal release that when pressed down releases the blade. It should connect to the plastic button somehow... I got it jammed in the "release" position (so the blade doesn't lock anymore) but that's better than it being stuck in "lock"...
the knob at the bottom[ i don't think is supposed to turn. check the exterior unit for any type of hatch. then see if there is a screw that will open it. be careful i had one of these. i used it to harshly and it snapped in two
