My Coleman OHV 3000 will not start

If I spray starter fluid in the carb, it runs for a few seconds then stops. Fuel flow to carb seems to be the problem. I have clean fuel and a new spark plug properly gapped.

Is there a fuel line filter I can't see?

Is there a cleaner I can put in tank that may clean carb.?

This generator has always been hard to start.

Dont use starter fluid ,will ruin engine.Sounds like the float in the carb is stuck.and keep lookin for a filter.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

If the generator has sat for some time the fuel in the float bowl will turn into a varnish like substance (shellac). The residual fuel in the carb will have to be removed. You do this by removing the fuel solenoid (or bowl nut) which ever one youhave that secures the float bowl to the carb. Then take a screw driver and remove the main fuel orifice and remove the debris from the main fuel orifice. Clean the orifice with carb cleaner. DO NOT push anything into the hole! Also spray the brass tube that the main fuel jet screws into with carb cleaner. You should see carb cleaner being sprayed into the throat of the carb.

While the fuel float bowl is removed get a spray can lid and hold it under the carb float. Turn on the fuel selector and the fuel should completely fill the spray can lid in 8 - 10 seconds. If you do not have this amount of fuel flow you need to remove the main fuel line from the carb and re-check fuel flow. If the flow is good here then use carb cleaner in the float needle area to force any debris back out the fuel manufold connection that is now open because you removed the fuel line. If you still do not have fuel flow then check for debris in the fuel tank exit port, the fuel filter, the sediment bowl under the fuel shut off assembly.
Once again with the spray can lid under the float you should have fuel flow anytime the fuel selector is on and the float level is down. It should shut off fuel just as it reaches level. Any other result and the float and float needle will have to be removed, cleaned and inspected for debris.

Make sure to re-install the main fuel orifice in the treaded area that secures the float bowl in place and.re-connect the main fuel line to the fuel manifold / carb fuel inlet connection

If the engine has a fuel solenoid hook it up and and see of it is working as you turn the key / engine switch on and off before you reinstall the float bowl. You make have to hold the case of the solenoid against the engine to make a ground AWAY from any residual fuel for testing. I.e. don't burn up your generator.
Re-install the fuel float bowl and test the engine. It should now work just fine.
The above steps are successful most of the time on generatosr that have sat idle for an extended period. I have been working on generators large and small for over 40 years.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

I cant get my coleman powermate 5000 MAXA ER to start. i have changed the oil, refilled the gas, changed the spark plug, and tried using starter fluid. what else can i try?

It's almost certainly gummed up gas in the carburetor. Get some carb cleaner, and some spray instant start. Drain the gas from the tank and put a small amount of 50/50 carb cleaner and gas in the tank. Remove the air cleaner, open the choke, spray a little instant start into the carb and start it. It may fire just a couple of time. Keep the choke on to try to pull a bit of gas through the carb. You may have to do this a few times. Once you can tell some gas is flowing, open the choke slowly to keep it running until you use up the 50/50 mix. Then try a small amount of straight gas in the tank to be sure it works right, before you refill the tank. Make sure you use a stabilizing additive in any gas that you store for more than a month. good luck, Al K

I spray some gas in the carboraitor. It runs for about 5 sec. and stops. There is gas in the tank.

Your Coleman power generator's carburettor is clogged. Your can tell that this is so, since
when you circumvented the carburettor (by spraying fuel), the engine worked.

Last time I fixed a clogged carb, I put it into a coffee can, hosed it down with carb cleaner spray (and some WD-40, which I had alot of at the time), and let it sit in cleaner fluid for 3 days.
It worked perfectly after that.
Failing the "soak it in cleaner" solution, the next step to getting your carb to work is to rebuild it, by purchasing a carburettor rebuild kit for your specific carburettor.

Next time, instead of spraying gas (this provides gasoline like a primer bulb would), you could also try spray "Starting Fluid" available at any car parts store - but gasoline works too. Anytime I debug a small engine, there's a can of spray starting fluid nearby.

3 weeks ago I had my coleman 5000 generator in to be fixed. The man flushed the gas tank, replaced the carb, did a tune up,changed the spark plug, and did an oil change. When I went out to start it a few...

You got spark & compression
The air filter is not an issue
You got clean fuel
You got oil and the machine is not freezing
Sounds like the exhaust port is open and free

Fuel is the only suspect remaining

Pull off the fuel line and see if gas flows to carburetor.
Pull off gas filter and see if gas flows free
Try some gum out

Now here's something we discovered.
Our machine wouldn't run on full throttle.
We had to set it at half throttle, and it ran like a top for years.

Try messing with the throttle settings to find a setting that works.
Finally, if none of the above work, it must be the carburetor.

HONDA MAKES LOUSY CARBS:
Remove the Carberator from the engine...You need to inspect it.
Remove the carb bowl and clean it.
Remove the Float and clean the valve seat seat.
Blow thru the fuel flow areas and see if plugged.
Note: A PC compressed air can works well for this.
There is a steel plug going up to the center of the carb venturi.
This plug get plugged a lot! rust is the problem!
Use a very tiny drill less than .010 Dia to check for rust.
Insert from the bottom up and see if it comes out in the venturi.
If not, you need to hand force the drill upward and clean it out.
Soak everything by spraying carb cleaner in all openings.

note: DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE THE RUSTED PLUG. CLEAN OUT THE HOLE SO FUEL CAN FLOW INTO THE VENTURI. DO NOT DRILL IT OVERSIZE.

Re install the carb...90% of all Honda engine problems is the same.

Wont stay running

the problems is in the carburetor, common problems when unit does not run often and rust get get build up. get some automotive carburetor cleaners and spray it heavy in the carb, don't worried about flooding it or damaging anything, it will dry out faster than gas. (use little gas if you need to) try to start it up and get it running with the carb cover off and continue to spray carb cleaner in the carb while the engine is running, do this couple of time and hope that would clear it out. if that don't work you will need to take it apart and clean it. you have small tiny object obstructing the carb flow. the unit doesn't have a fuel pump, it run on gravity feed, the carb are easily obstructed. hope that help a bit

yes gas will deteriate and leave varnish deposits clogging carberator and layer in tank has yellowish color flush lines with brake cleaner and spray carb with spray carb cleaner and spray inside fuel inlet on carb let sit about 15 minutes redo and sit about 4 times clean fuel tank with brake cleaner (with tank off) until clean, refill with fresh gas and add about table spoon carb cleaner per quart of gas and let in run for awhile. when storing for any period of time add fuel stabilizer to avoid this issue in future

Sounds like you need to clean the carb ports, lines, jets, etc... purchase a carb spray cleaner with a tube to place on the spray head (Berryman's Chemtool B-12 is awesome). Reinstall complete with air cleaner and retry... also if the gas is old, drain and replace with new...
