Question about Sylvania SST4322 32" TV

1 Answer

Picture smear and screen brighter on the right hand side

The TV has a bad picture, text on the screen smears and the picture as a whole has a lack of contrast and is over bright. If you select AV with no signal the right half(ish) of the screen gets brighter the further right you go. It is noticeable that the smeared text gets worse on the right of the screen. I suspect a capacitor somewhere, I do not think it?s the tube as the text would smear fairly evenly across the screen, I must admit it?s been over twenty years since I used to fix TV?s and I did that only when the TV guys were over run. So I might be wrong.

Re: Picture smear and screen brighter on the right hand...

If you know how to read a service manus then what you are looking for is a possible bad cap on the 200v source feeding the video output collectors or video output IC. That is the first suspect.

Hazy picture

This is listed in the standard TV area which means set has a picture tube and is not a lcd or plasma.

That being said try a rear audio and video input first to see if same issue or not.

Try to lower contrast and brightness (contrast on some sets is called picture) to see if that helps.

Lastly shoot me a model and brand.

The tv will not stay on

If it goes out after a few minutes, it could be bad solder connections on the convergence IC's or elsewhere. If it shuts down right away, it could be a short in one of the picture tubes which would not be worth replacing. It could also be a shorted high voltage transformer which would also make it beyond economical repair. Unless the set had an exceptionally good picture, I would be inclined to replace it. If you have noticed any color "smearing" across parts of the picture -- trash it.

When i swithch off my Phillips Tv model 25PT4323/79R when the picture appear it switch off after 10 seconds which unit on the board needs to be replaced

It may be due to the change [high] in the screen voltage. You just open your tv and locate the screen control. You cn see it attached with the LOT [Line Output Transformer]. There are two controls integrated to it and are adjustable. Out of which, one is for facus adjustment, and the other is for screen adjustment. Usually the upper one is meant for focus adjust, and the lower one for screen adjustment, and there will be visible markings near it about which is it meant for. Just turn it counterclokwise a little, say very little, while the tv is on and there is screen on it, whether it is blue back or grains. More turn counterclockwise will make the picture in your tv get smeared. A little must be done.
Check this and see. Ok

I left my tv on when I went to bed and the picture was fine. Then I woke up and turned it off. When I came home and turned it back on, the picture was blurry all around the tv except in the middle of the...

is the blurry all around the picture have different color like a smear of red, blue or yellow?
if it is i think the posistor of your tv is not working. it is the one who activate the degaussing coil around the picture tube the prevent color miss-landing upon opening your tv set.

Picture beginning to fail

There are some components it the vertical deflection amplifier area that are becoming thermo sensitive with age. It is also possible that there will be parts going off value in the power supply and other areas.

These problems are typical in these sets when they are aged. The cost of the repair may not be worth the investment.

You should take the set in to a service center for an estimate.

Your whole problem my freind is dryed up capacitors. You should go, if you have the technical ability to replace these capacitors, to, download the schematic diagram, and start replacing the waveshaper capacitors in the vertical drive circuit.
