Is the hard drive firing up?

You may well have power and lights but a blown system board.

if its running then you should be able to hear the hard drive working as it loads windows. If all is quiet then suspect a board down - maybe static done it as you worked on the memory install - it happens!

Static is the small electric shock one can experience when walking over something like a carpet of man-made material (nylon?) and then touching a door handle (earthing the static electricity build up)

If you don't know what static is youshould not be ventyuring into the depths of your computer!

if the board is blown then that is it, sorry to say - no fix except a new board.

    Leave it to someone experienced

Have Gateway M6866 Laptop. Will not boot. when power button is pressed. you hear a fan start power light comes on, harddrive light and a few others comes on for 2 seconds then goes off. screen is always...

If it never posts anything to the screen then more than likely you've got a video card issue. It could be the memory also.

When you plug in the power cord is there any lightswhatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of thepower cord?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear theDvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for asecond or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, butthe screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous. Most times the problemis with the memory or Video Card. Count the Blinking Lights or Beeps and takenote of their pattern (1 Long or 1 Long followed by 2 Short).

Maybe your power cord is bad if you don't get anything to happen whatsoeverwhen you press the power button. And if that's true maybe you wasoperating off the battery the last time you had it on and since the power cordis bad, it was not charging the battery so the battery is drained and the powercord is bad.

Maybe you have a Static Charge Buildup. Remove the Power Cord, Remove theBattery, then Press and Hold the power button for 30seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cord back in (leave the batteryout) and hit the power button to see if it boots. If it does, you can putthe battery back in and let it charge.Maybe your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugsinto the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside thejack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have totake the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto themotherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.Maybe your memory is bad or the memory slot is bad.Remove the Power Cord, Remove the Battery, Remove the cover that houses the memory on the bottom of the laptop then remove one of thememory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer. If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark an x onit with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the nextmemory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set itaside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If itboots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it and putit into the open memory chip slot and try booting.

On start up fan runs, no beeps, black screen, no response from keyboard & mouse. Unplugged everything for 30 minutes, then tried again, start up began then went to black screen, no keyboard, no m

in your case, there might be some problem with the main board.
usually no beeps will related to the processor error / mainboard error / ram error / PSU error

to check the processor : try to exchange the processor with the same type.

to check the Memory: try use rubber eraser to clean the cooper plate of the memory. then plugged it again.

in case if there is a power supply error, then try to exchange the power supply using other PC PSU.

if all steps above are checked, the problem might be at the mainboard. in that case, replacement will be the best option.

Power light comes on can hear runnig-black screen never boots up

Remove external devices, remove battery and power, then reposition battery and power and try again. If no go you can try re-seating the memory, disconnect power sources and touch a metal surface to discharge static. You will see panels at the bottom of the unit. The one for the memory is usually the one in the center of the whole unit. This video will show you to remove and reposition memory.

I have an HP Paviion dv9008nr Entertainment -black screen at boot

Unseat and reseat the memory one stick at a time in each slot on at a time. After each reseat of the memory, turn on the laptop and see if you get video. If you still don't get video, go ahead and take out the hard drive and the dvd drive.

Then try turning on the laptop, if you still don't get video then the motherboard is bad and you'll need to get it replaced.

Gateway Laptop W340UA black screen

  1. take out the memory
  2. turn on again without memory (you should hear long beep sound) and turn it off again
  3. clean memory using eraser (better if you have spare memory to replace it)
  4. now try again
  5. if not working, checks whether the work properly? and clean the fan from dust. and try to switch it on again.
I look forward to hearing further.
