Ruud heat pump makes a clicking sound

Ruud heat pump clicks when producing heat when the compressor comes on. No click is heard when only the fan is running.

The term H.P. is just a reverse flow a/c. do you have one big machine outside or do you have the h.p. outside with the "airhandler" inside. up in the attic, a closet, garage, etc?

if the sound you hear is coming from the airhandler, then it is the heat strip relay/contactor kicking i and out providing supplimental heat.

if it is the outdoor machine, or h.p. then it can get tricky.a onetime click is probly the contactor sucking in or the reversing va;ve energizing.if it is numerous clicks then it becomes a low voltage control problem.

a loose connection can cause this.check around the contactor, reverse valve solinoid, and control wire nuts.Quite possibly a bad relay.look for the rvr solinoid not being on the 4 way valve properly.

good luck with low volt problems.

Many thermostats have a setting to keep the fan running instead of cycling with the compressor. Check its settings.

Sounds like your condencer fan motor is stuck. Can you take a long rod and when the power is off to the outside unit, spin the fan blade? Maybe it will be enough to get it working again.

Hi, clicking sound from compressor, means compressor not running (working) compressor overlay relay is what making that clicking sound, possible your compressor have a hard start, you can purchase compressor ( hard start kit ) from appliance store, your fans could be working, but compressor short cycling, you said fan not working? which one inside of ref, or one near to compressor, check fan, remove 2 wires from fan terminal, use ohm tester, place tester lead one on each fan terminal, if you get a beep sound (continuity) fan is o/k, if not, fan burnt out, replace fan, now if compressor is good, fans are good, then check or replace, defrost timer, but before doing any repairs, unplug ref, excessive water is because ref defrosting, because there's no refrigeration, remove your produce, leave ref. off for about an hour, then replug it, let it work for about another hour, then check to see if temp. dropping (colder) maybe you experiencing, low voltage, let me know what happened, then i can tell you exactly, what's the problem. good luck.

Outside unit clicks while thermostat auxiliary light flashes

Sounds like the compressor starting relay or capacitor is defective. When the compressor could not start, the electric heat came on to satisfy the heat requirement and causing the emergency heat light to come on at the thermostat. This light warns you that electric heaters are energized. And they use a LOT of electricity! Call a different company for service. And do it soon.
