Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

I have a Kenmore top load washer model 110.92389200. My wife had overloaded it and caused the rubber coupling between the motor and the transmission to disintegrate. I purchased the coupling kit and replaced the two plastic coupling ends and the rubber coupling. When I reassembled the washer I observed the washer making a noticeable squealing noise while it was in operartion and there was an accompanying smell of rubber when it is subjected to friction (similar to a vacuum cleaner belt that is binding). Any ideas?

I would look at that coupling you just installed to see if it has any wear. Also, could some of the old rubber be stuck somewhere.

My blind son overloaded the washer and it will not spin after I removed the clothes. The washer makes a noise like the motor is working but not connecting. how do I fix it?

The washer may have a broken drive coupling. This is a plastic coupling with a rubber insert mounted between the motor and transmission. If the coupling breaks, the motor will operate and make noise but the basket will not turn. You must access the motor to make this repair. The part is inexpensive but labor more costly. I've seen this many times while I was working on Kenmore washers. It is a lot better than broken transmission, and worthwhile repair. Overloading and wear and tear over time will cause these to fail.

Need manual for kenmore top load washer model 82891120. washer will agitate but not spin pump works to drain water.

the drive coupling or clutch is bad ! the coupling is between motor and the transmission. on a lot of washers its rubber or hard plastic to keep from ruining appliance if it breaks.this is why washer will not spin.

My wife put a load in the washer and it started with no problem but when it started to agitate something quit because it sounds like a metal sound just jingeling.[ no pun intended] any suggestions ?It is...

you're missing the last 3 numbers of the model number, if this is a top load washer there's a motor coupling that can let go from overloading the washer,i don't have the full model number so if you have the washer with the clips on the ends of the top console pop them off and remove the two phillips screws on each end of the console, flip the top console up and with a screw driver pop the two metal clips, just stick the screw driver in the hole so it's on the top of the clip and push back towards the wall and it will pop out, then you'll see a white wire harness close to the right clip, unplug that that's the lid switch, open the lid and grab the frame, tilt it back to you and pull straight back and remove the outer frame,on the bottom you'll see the pump, pop off the two clips and pull the pump off, next remove the two screws and pop the two clips off the motor and pull that out,on the back of the motor you'll see the coupling, one part is on the motor shaft and the other part is on the transmission and they slide into a rubber piece,if the three little arms are broke then you need a new coupling,it will take you like an hour to do this job and you'll save close to 200 bucks.the part number is 285753A and it's around 20 dollars.if you need a hand or any questions let me know

I have a kenmore 80 series top load washer. the agitation has gotten weaker but still works but now it will not spin after the rinse cycle. any ideas?

sounds like you have a problem with the motor. It could either be that the motor itself is going bad or it could be that the coupling between the motor and the transmission is broken. Have a look underneath the machine and look for bits of rubber. If there is some rubber down there its probably a busted coupling otherwise you may need a new motor.

Washer will fill up with water and that's it. Will not go into agitate or spin cycle. Did some loads this morning. Was going to do one more and found machine in middle of spin cycle not working. Tried...

If Kenmore and direct drive with no belt
then motor coupling needs to be replaced

The coupling is what is inbetween the motor and the transmission. It consists of 2 plastic pcs and a middle rubber. The purpose of the coupling is to not only interconnect the motor to the transmission therefore eliminating the BELT BUT if the washer is OVERLOADED, this inexpecnsive coupling breaks before other damage to motor or transmiossion occur.

My kenmore 80 washer spins just not enough to get as much water out as it should. not even 4 towels model 110-24872300. serial cr 10100 91 type 111

you may want to check, the motor coupler,
this is a three piece part, it sits between the transmission, and the motor and controls the speed
just by being in place..

The drum is not spinning. I hear a noise like when you stick something in your bike spokes.

Assuming that this is a Kenmore / Whirlpool top loader with a direct drive system, the first thing to check is the motor coupling.

The transmission and motor have plastic parts that connect through a rubber coupling.

pd_0026_110_285753a?$pddetailsth$ #13 on diagram Coupling, motor and isolation Number:661560Substitution:285753A $18.50 If the coupler rubber piece wears out, the pins on the motor and transmission sides will rub together making the sound.

If the coupler looks good the problem is likely in the transmission.

Washer makes noises

You said, when the washer is going into spin cycle it makes a loud clunking noise. You are wondering if this could be the brakes or possibly the pump?

Sounds like this!

Faulty direct drive Coupling (Whirlpool / Kenmore / Roper / Estate)
The direct drive (motor) Coupling may be broken. Many Whirlpool/Kenmore brands washing machines utilize a small, relatively inexpensive direct drive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other.

It can wear out over time or fail under overloading conditions. This protects your transmission from excessive loading.
it can also be a broken spring or strut dependping on your washes make and type
