Check the pressure differential switch. This is a black unit with 2 wires and a small plastic tube coming out of it. The small tube goes to the exhaust flue and the 2 wires go into the control. If this switch fails, it constantly tells the unit that the flue is blocked. You can tell if this is the problem by using a continuity tester on it... when you ****/blow you should alternately get continuity and no continuity. You can also jump the leads and see if it ignites. Obviously make sure the flue is clear before you do this. If you have to replace it they are readily available. Tripp

Rheem 27 ignites for about a second when cold tap turned on

When you ignites, I assume you mean it fires. If so you have a dirty or defective flame sensor. Usually they can be cleaned with steel wool or a piece of fine sand paper, do not rub aggresively!

As the term implies, it is supposed to varify that the gas has indeed ignited and sends a signal to the gas valve to remain open. If the sensor has a built up film from dirt or moisture it does not properly sense the flame and shuts the gas valve off to prevent a build up of gas in the burner box.

Water heater burner wont light

Problem is not thermocouple:
Thermocouple should be finger-tight plus 1/4 turn
Overtightening will short thermocouple against gas control valve, and solenoid switch will not open, and no gas will reach pilot once red button is released.
Tip of thermocouple has to sit in the pilot flame.
If pilot flame will stay on, then thermocouple is good.

Problem is not solenoid switch.
The gas control valve solenoid opens and closes gas supply to gas control valve.
On mechanical gas control valve, when you push down the red button to light pilot, then you are opening the solenoid and letting gas flow into gas control valve.
When heat is applied to thermocouple, a small electric current travels to gas control valve, and this causes solenoid to stay open.
If you extinguish pilot, then no current travels to gas control, and solenoid clicks off.
You can hear it click, and this is how you test it.
However, since you are getting gas to pilot light, then the solenoid is not the problem.

This leaves 4 possible problems:
1) Bad gas control valve thermostat.

2) Inadequate gas pressure. Call gas company.
3) Dirty combustion parts. Clean the burner with wire brush and water.
4) Clogged air intake on FV water heaters: Rheem FV gas water heaters have glass vial that will break if combustion is slowed by clogged air intake.

Can not get it to light. Specifically, who do I

Look through the sight glass to see when the spark ignites the pilot flame. You still need to hold down on the Rheem pilot control button for another 60 seconds to make sure it is properly heated.

Rheem tankless water heater wont lite

the system was not sized properly, you need to have a 3/4 gas line to the unit for the volume of gas it needs, the tankless water heaters need to have every bit of gas that is says, it sounds like who ever installed di not make sure you had enough gas comming in the house, you might have to either have a new meter installed or run the gas lind directly from the meter to the water heater and cap off the gas line thats there

Roscoe007 shouldnt speak unless he knows what he is talking about, as a heater installer i am telling you the ignitor needs to be replaced, the very fact that the ignitor does light for about 30 sec than goes out rules out any issue with the themostat, replace the ignitor!

Rheem water heater with powerglow ignition wont re-light

I have fixed mine. The problem part is the Ignition Control module. It is made by Robert Shaw part # SP10758. I paid $93 plus shipping.

Works great now. A repairman wanted to sell me a gas valve for $488.
Watch out for these people.....
