Hi Rossmac,

Both the smoke and it's lack of cutting ability are symptoms of the same problem. The Chain is dulled. Instead of cutting, it's just rubbing on the wood and heating up. It's also not a big deal to fix..

Your options are:

  • Replace the Chain
  • Have the Chain sharpened
  • Sharpen it yourself
To sharpen it yourself, you will need a narrow round file that will fit inside the Chain teeth. Each tooth has a two cutting edges, get the file a position that matches the tooths angle of attack. Don't over do, three to five swipes of the file should do it on each surface.

You will see they alternate directions. You may find it easier to do all the teeth in one direction (skipping every other tooth) then do the other direction. Up to you.

When you are done, check the level of your chain oil. Since it did get hot, you might manually oil the chain before trying out your handi-work.

Go cut some wood.

May I ask why you decided to give my solution a poor rating?

I gave you the reasons for your problem, alternative solutions and the procedure for fixing it yourself if you so chose.

    What more could you want?

There is no 'auto sharpen - make the smoke stop' button, if that's what you were looking for. So as a reward for taking the time to provide an effective correct usable solution to your problem at no cost to you, you give me a rating that says I was no help whatsoever and reduces my standing in the community. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to undo the dozens of FixYa ratings you have negated with your generous TFT, not to mention the dozens more it will take to recover from it.

Well, I hope you get your problem fixed, but I advise you to look elsewhere for a solution.

    Happy Holidays

Update - Craftsman now has a self sharpening feature on some of their models.

I was skeptical, but let me tell you, when they say it will sharpen the chain, d@mn. The done deal was sharper than any chain (including new) I've ever used

You were absolutely correct. My chainsaw blade was dull. I purchased a Manufacturer Refurbished Paulan Pro 20" 46cc. The chain came in a plastic bag supposedly new. Tried to cut a 6" log and it would not go all the way through and the chain began to smoke. Had my friend sharpen it and now it cuts through everything. Don't know why Paulan Pro would send me a dull chain. Thanks again and have a happy holidays.

I don't know on that model number if the chain oiler has any adjustment. If it does then you can cut it down some. If not as long as the saw is cutting good I would not worry much about it cause about the worse thing thats going to happen is it will make a mess. However a lack of oil can cause damage quickly, such as a ruined chain or guide bar. Thanks

Hi, my 16" Ryobi seems to have suddenly gone

When you are cutting you want to keep the chain out of the dirt...dirt will dull a chain so fast it will make your head spin. sound like you need to have the chain sharpened..there are mini grinders available for about 20 bucks that will allow you to sharpen your own chain...if you don't want to go that route then you can take the chain to your local hardware store or possibly a tree cutting service to get it sharpened

As it is a new machine, you should return it for warranty repair or exchange. Make sure that the electricity source will power a working lamp. Good luck!

Use regular bar/chain oil available from home centers, hardware stores, and saw shops. Always keep the chain properly sharpened and tensioned so that you don't have to force the chain into the cut which causes motor overheating. If you need to make an 'under' cut, do so with the top of the bar--don't run the saw upside down. Good luck!

Petrol leaking when turned up side down,Ryobi Chainsaw

Upside down is not a usual sawing position--only upright, or turned to the left or right side is recommended. If you need to undercut something, keep the saw upright and cut with top side of the chain/bar.This can lead to kick-back if the tip comes free of the log/branch, so you need to control the saw carefully. That's also why there is a chain brake on all newer saws. The leaking may be occurring where the fuel lines pass through the wall of the fuel tank. Hope this helps!

The sharpened edge will be heading away from you at the top of the chain bar if the chain is not on backwards, and yes it will only cut in one direction, put it on as described and then adjust it so it has about 3/8 of an inch play at half way down the bar and you should be good.

What size file do i use for a Ryobi chainsaw model PCN4545 to sharpen the chain

The standard chain file should fit it. It is about 3/16 dia. I found the dremel to work 10 times better, they have a little stone bit just for chains. Eventually, you have to take it in for sharpening, it will set all the teeth the same.

14" Ryobi petrol chainsaw will only run for 10 seconds

You are on the right track. Keep priming which indicates the fuel mixture is too lean to run. In other words the fuel line is partially clogged up. A drop of water on the gas tank would cause this problem. The fuel is fed on the suction basis. So clean up the fuel tank, (disassembly the carburator) reservoir, needle, float, offrice and fuel filter. A can of carburator cleaner (spray one) is a big help.

I have the same model chainsaw with the same fault. The brake is not releasing when the brake handle is pulled right back. I can only run mine if the brake handle is pulled back to the main handle with a tyrap - defeats the object of the auto-brake completely. Design fault I reckon.
