Question about Acer Aspire 3680 Laptop

POwer pin came unattached after being dropped

I need to re-solder the power pin. How do I remove the shell on this Acer?
Is there a manual? It's beyond the warranty and this problem is so minor, I should be able to accomplish it once I remove the shell.

Wait a minute. What?

From what I read;
1) One wire of the AC adapter (Charger) is hot to the touch.
'.....when I touch the charge one part of the wire is very hot."

2) AC adapter checks out as far as voltage is concerned.
"I tested the charger voltage and everything is ok."

3) "Sometimes when I touch the charge appear the icon...Could it be the charger broken wire?"

Does this mean, "Sometimes when I touch the AC adapter (Charger), the battery icon appears."?

Battery is CHARGING icon?

Could it be a broken wire in the power cable TO charger?

Uh, yeah.

1) AC adapter NOT plugged into the DC Power Jack, plug the power cable of the AC adapter into power.

Multimeter set to DC Voltage, and proper scale, red Positive lead to harness wire that goes to DC Power Jack's center pin;

,black Negative lead of multimeter, to wire that goes to DC Power jack's inside cylindrical metal shell;

Now gently wiggle the cable from the AC adapter, TO the DC Power Jack of the laptop.

Do you get an intermittent reading?

Damp sponge, and cleaned the well tinned No.2 chisel tip, of the soldering iron, frequently? Used rosin solder flux?

Center pin wire (Positive), of harness cable TO DC Power Jack, was soldered to the center pin of the DC Power Jack?

Negative wire of cable TO DC Power Jack, was soldered to the inside shell of the DC Power Jack?
(Cylindrical shell, inside the DC Power Jack, that surrounds the center pin of the jack)

Sure there are no cold solder joints?

Not trying to 'browbeat' you, just am curious.

1) IF you are SURE you have the polarity correct, of the wires in the harness cable, that goes to the DC Power Jack;

,and you are SURE there is no broken wire, in the cable from the AC adapter (Charger) TO the DC Power Jack;

,and you are sure you made good solder joints;

I suspect the power correcting chipset on the motherboard, to be bad, or perhaps a Diode.

One example of the chipset I am referring to. This one is used in a lot of laptops. May not be used in yours, but gives you something to refer to when looking for a bad chipset, in the power stage, on your motherboard,

Usually when bad the top of the chipset will be blackened, or bubbled.
A Diode is a one way valve for electricity. When they go bad it is visually obvious.

Laptop no power


Check the output of the AC adapter (Charger), or skip to check the DC Power Jack, first.

A) DC Power Jack:
The jack on the laptop that the AC adapter (Charger) plugs into.

IF, this is in reference to an HP Pavilion dv2000z series of Notebook PC, this is what the jack looks like not installed,

In the views of the jack, the pins and blade are on the Bottom of the jack.
They go down through the motherboard, and are soldered in place.

Scroll down to Step 5, and observe the Solder Joints.

IF, a solder joint, (Or more than one), is cracked, the DC Power jack will Not flow power to the laptop.

ALL power removed (AC adapter and Battery) see if you can gently wiggle the Center Pin, of the DC Power Jack. Using a non-metallic object is preferred.

See if the entire jack seems to move around.

ANY perceptible movement means a bad DC Power Jack, or solder joint/s.
Laptop is to be completely disassembled, down to the BARE motherboard in your hand. (No Processor, no Ram Memory, Nada )

A) You can use a 25 Watt soldering iron, with a No.2 chisel tip.
Keep a damp sponge handy, if you do not have one in a soldering iron stand. Keep the tip CLEAN, and well tinned, at all times.

B) Use Desoldering Braid. (Solder Wick)
Works MUCH better than a Desoldering Tool. (Solder S-ucker Tool)

Unroll a small length. Flatten out a small length, around 2 inches long.
Lay enough of the tip of the Desoldering Braid, across the solder joint to cover it. Then lay the tip of the soldering iron on top of the braid.

Once the braid, AND solder heat up enough, the fine twisted wires of the Desoldering Braid will pick up some solder.

GO S-L-O-W.

If you overheat the solder joint, the copper circuit trace area under it, can lift right off of the motherboard. Bad times are ahead.

If you overheat the solder joint, the copper circuit trace area under the solder joint, can lose it's tinning, and CANNOT be re-tinned again.
Bad times ahead.

As soon as the solder starts to melt, and you see the braid has picked up some, remove the solder iron, and braid.
Allow the motherboard circuit trace area to cool down.

Then begin again with a fresh new piece of Desoldering Braid.
Cut the solder soaked section off.

Keep going back, until you have removed all of the excess solder that you can.
(Make take a few times, or more, to perform this, and allow the circuit trace area to cool down in-between )

There will be a skin coat of solder left behind. As you heat one of the pins, or the blade, pull up on the jack.

The pin, or blade, will partially come out. It will not come all the way out because of the other pins, or blade, is still soldered in.

Go to the next pin/blade, and heat it up. Pull. The pins, and blade will come out of the motherboard a little further.
Allow the circuit trace area to cool down in-between heating each pin, or the blade.

Keep going around until the jack is free.
You might have a skin coat going across the circuit trace hole.
That's OK, leave it.

When the new jack is installed, the pins, or blade goes against this skin coat. When the soldering iron touches the skin, the pins, or blade, will poke through.

Make GOOD, shiny bright solder joints. A dull, cold solder joint, will have you scratching your head.

B) If the DC Power Jack proves to be good, with the simple test of the device to see if it will wiggle, go to the AC adapter. (Charger)

The Center Hole in the plug that plugs into the DC Power Jack, is Positive. The outer cylindrical metal shell is Negative.

Positive (Red) probe lead to Center Hole, Negative (Black) probe lead to outside cylindrical metal shell.

Function knob set to DC Voltage. (If just a symbol, the symbol is a dotted line over a solid line. If more than one scale, set it to the 0 - 50 Volt scale )

You should be reading VERY close to 18.5 Volts.

Also have an assistant wiggle the Power Cord, and the cable from the adapter unit, TO the laptop.

An intermittent reading indicates a broken wire.

DC Power Jack, and AC adapter check out, the problem is the power controller chipset.

Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.

When bad, generally the power controller chipset will burn up, and blacken.

Note that in both examples above, that the chipsets are in a D2PAK surface mount design.

The J leads are easy to unsolder, and solder.

DC Jack diagnosis:

2. If power adapter is Ok, connect it & see if the power LED on the laptop will glow when you jiggle the power connector in various directions. If yes, then the DC jack might be loose or damaged, & need to be either re-soldered or replaced.
3. If not, then disassemble the laptop. Remove any components that attach to the laptop's motherboard first (e.g. battery, hard drive, RAM, wireless card, optical drive, ... etc.)
4. Next, remove the keyboard & the LCD screen.
5. Finally, unscrew all screws that hold the upper cover & lower cover together so that you could gain access to the motherboard.
6. Inspect the solder points connecting the DC jack to the motherboard. Make sure that none of them is loose. If any, re-solder them.
7. Inspect the center pin in the DC jack. Make sure that it is not broken or loose. If it is, then you might need to replace the DC jack.
8. When you are done, re-assemble back the laptop.

I have an Acer Aspire 7736z which wont charge. Ive already found that the battery connector/battery pin/battery port whichever youd like to call it has snapped off. Any information on how to fix it? where...

There is a bad connection between the power cord and the port into which it fits. this bad connect has lasted for weeks. i've been able to jiggle the cord and situate it so their is a connection. but, now...


The port on the laptop where the AC adapter, (Charger to some), plugs into is the DC Power Jack.
(Or DC-in )

This is an example of an aftermarket manufacturers offering for a DC Power jack, that fits an Acer Aspire 4520 Series Notebook, (Laptop),

As you probably know computers use DC voltage.
Your laptop battery, and a flashlight battery are examples of stored DC electricity.

Looking at all three views, the middle pin of the jack is for the Positive connection. Down inside the round opening on the side, is a strip of metal. One on each side. These are for the Negative connection.

Looking at the jack in all three views, you will note a flat pin, or Prong, that comes up in the middle, and at the back of the jack.
You will note that it is riveted to the center pin, or Positive connection.

The two flat pins, (Or Prongs), immediately on either side of the middle flat pin, are for the Negative connection. They connect to the strips of metal inside the round jack opening.

In relation to how the jack sits inside the laptop, the jack is upside down. The flat pins go down through the motherboard, and are soldered to the motherboard on the other side.

1.The body of the DC Power Jack is made of a type of Phenolic plastic. Hard, and has great insulating qualities.

It is also easily broken.
If you can move the center pin around, this is what has happened. (Battery REMOVED!)

Solution is to replace the DC Power Jack.

2.Where the flat pins go through the motherboard, and are soldered, is called a Solder Joint. The area where the flat pin meets the motherboard, and solder is applied.

One, or more solder joints can crack.
This gives you an intermittent connection, such as you have described.

Solution is to re-solder the solder joint/s.

3.There are also laptops that have a bad motherboard design.
The DC Power Jack is placed on an area of the motherboard, that is weak.

If you think of a 1 foot square sheet of plastic, as being the main body of the motherboard, and attach a 2 inch strip to the main body, this is the area shape that I'm referring to.

The 2 inch strip can crack, where it meets the main body.
Motherboards have Circuit Traces. Think of them as Very, Flat, Thin, copper wires.
Circuit traces go across the main body of the motherboard, and lead to the 2 inch strip. If this 2 inch strip cracks away from the main body of the motherboard, the circuit traces break.

If you move the AC adapter plug while in the DC Power Jack, you may be able to make the broken circuit traces touch each other, making a connection.
Eventually this fails to work.

Solution is to replace the motherboard. With this type of bad design the problem will reoccur.

Looking at the Board Layout, Top View, on Page 12, you can see the DC Power Jack.

Come down below the 1 with the red small rectangle. Look straight to the left of the Half Moon hole, with the two top corners cut off. The DC Power Jackis on near the edge of the motherboard. (Board)

On Page 13 you're looking at the Bottom view of the motherboard. (Board)
The little silvery dots are solder joints.

Your motherboard design does not follow Item 3,
I listed above.

ACER ASPIRE 4730Z. How do I clear the CMOS (password)?

Steps for Clearing BIOS Password Check

If users set BIOS Password (Supervisor Password and/or User Password) for a security reason, BIOS will ask
the password during systems POST or when systems enter to BIOS Setup menu. However, once it is
necessary to bypass the password check, users need to short the HW Gap to clear the password by the
following steps:
• Power Off a system, and remove HDD, AC and Battery from the machine.
• Open the back cover of the machine, and find out the HW Gap on M/B as picture.
• Use an electric conductivity tool to short the two points of the HW Gap.
• Plug in AC, keep the short condition on the HW Gap, and press Power Button to power on the
system till BIOS POST finish. Then remove the tool from the HW Gap.
• Restart system. Press F2 key to enter BIOS Setup menu.
• If there is no Password request, BIOS Password is cleared. Otherwise, please follow the steps and
try again.
NOTE: The steps are only for clearing BIOS Password (Supervisor Password and User Password).

The dc power jack will not accept power. I have to wiggleit to get the blue light to show that the laptop is charging. My computer is the acer aspire 5920-6423. I dont know how to remove the key board to...


It's a little more involved than just removing the keyboard. You have to
Completely disassemble the laptop, until just the motherboard is in your
hand.

HOWEVER, for this Acer model it's a different installation, than the
normal one. This DC Power Jack uses a small wire harness. You just
unplug the old one, and install the new one. Let me explain,

I'm a tech who normally works on HP, Compaq, IBM, (Lenova now),
and Acer laptops. Acer's that are older than yours. All the DC Power
Jacks that I have replaced, are directly soldered to the motherboard,
and have no wire harness leading off of them. No plug connector on
the end of a harness, either.

In my search just now for a replacement power jack, my findings show
that the Acer Aspire 5920 series have a small wire harness.

Here the jack is offered minus the harness. You have to unsolder your old
harness from the defunct power jack, and solder it to the new one.

You'll find the body of the DC jack is made of plastic. There is a metal
pin in the center. (This is the Positive post. + )
Some DC power jacks have a metal cylinder, or metal tube shape that surrounds the Positive metal center pin. This is the Negative connection.
Some just have a flat metal contact prong in the back for Negative.

If you have your AC adapter plugged in, and the plug is bumped, the metal
center pin can break loose from it's mount. Break loose from the plastic
body. Same thing for the metal 'shell' for the Negative connection, but this
doesn't happen as often.
Again, most DC Power Jacks have metal flat prongs that come out of the
power jack's body, go through the motherboard, and are soldered on the
backside. These solder connections can crack, and break, making an
intermittent connection. Doesn't seem to be the case for yours, IF the
jacks shown are the correct ones.

This may help you in your endeavor to disassemble your Acer Aspire.
(AND reassemble!) (TIP from me. DEFINITELY buy an ESD wrist strap
and connect the alligator clip to a good ground. They only cost about
$5 to $7 dollars. They are to relieve static from your body. Electro Static

The only internal power for a laptop is the battery. The external power is the AC adapter. (Charger)
If you're asking for the schematics, for the circuitry and component layout of the motherboard, to my knowledge only HP trained authorized technicians, have access to this. In truth, if they have a problem, they just replace the entire motherboard. It's more cost and time effective.

Which leads me to this. The main issue of power problems for a laptop, is the DC Power Jack, right after a failing battery. This is the round port on a laptop, where the AC adapter plugs in. Although replacement of this jack, is no 'Walk in the park', it isn't that tough. However, there aren't that many of we tech's around, who do this anymore. There are just a bunch of 'Parts Changers' out there. Still, from a laptop manufacturers point of view, it may be more time and cost effective, to just replace the motherboard. Less chance of that laptop coming back for the same issue.

I state, that the DC Power Jack is the main source for laptop power failure, right after a failing laptop battery because, the jack receives a lot of accidental abuse. When the AC adapter is plugged in, and the plug of the adapter receives a heavy 'bump', the DC Power Jack can break, or it's solder connections can break, very easily.

The thick pin in the center is the Positive connection. The outer metal shell inside, is the Negative connection.

Sometimes the plastic body can break. Sometimes the connection at the end of the center pin, can break. Sometimes the cylindrical metal outer shell, inside the body of the jack, can break.

There is also another issue. In the photo the DC Power Jack is upside down, in relation to how it sits on the motherboard. The flat metal pins that are sticking up, go down through holes in the motherboard, and are soldered to the motherboard, on the backside.
(The flat metal pin in the middle sticking up, goes to the center pin in the jack. One of the flat metal pins on the sides, goes to the metal shell inside the jack. The third flat metal pin on the side, is just soldered to the motherboard, and helps to give strength to hold the jack in place)
Sometimes these solder joints for those pins can be broken. They develop a crack in the solder joint.
In a case like this, just re-soldering the solder joint/s, puts the laptop back in business.

I posted all of this, in case this is the issue you are having.

(IF you take the laptop apart, remove the battery and the AC adapter first. Also so I suggest using an ESD wrist strap. They are cheap, and help to insure that you relieve your body of Static electricity)
