Rear Projection RCA Snapping & Shutting down

1995 46'' RCA Trimline Rear Projection TV ... For what it is this TV has always worked fine. However, recently we have experienced the following issues:

1: Colors started to blink & occassionally turn to Black & White.
2: We can hear a snapping sound when this occurs.
3: Snapping sound has been occuring much more frequently.
4: Colors flicker, snapping sound occurs, TV shuts off for a few seconds ... & then turns back on.

Thanks ... Kha

I am guessing it to be an intermittent condition of somekind.

Just tap the set with your hand; on the back, sides, top, etc. to see if you can restore the picture. If so, then I am right. Unfortunately, these kinds of problems are very hard to find. If you can find a reliable place to tap or strike the unit, do that and than don;t touch it!

Sometimes if you can put some torque or twist on the chassis it will keep the loose connection inside working. You can do this by placing a small object under one of the corners or something creative like that.

If this technique does not help, you will have to repair it. The cost may be more than the price of a new set.

RGB as Ginko put it is your Red/Green/Blue or color generating board going into failsafe (black and white mode. As this has to do with picture quality, you are best to take it to a shop as they would have the equip to service but be ready, they could give a repair as expensive as a new set.

Dear sir,
Let me make you clear that it doesn't sounds like its a do-it-yourself job.I guess there is a multiple component failure in the circuitry of your TV. Some capacitors have surely worn out. I would strongly recommend that you take help of a qualified technician as handling television circuitry without good knowledge is very dangerous and can be fatal. Till the technician advices you do not switch it On to avoid more damage.
Please rate me appropriately if you are satisfied with my answer,in case, if you want any clarification please get back to me.

Let me know model number of TV please.

As its bit old TV so more chances are that it has few capacitors weak in deflection and power supply section.

Few dry solder joints in power supply and deflection boards are also possible cause of above symptoms.

Color turns to blackj and white because there is an internal fault, probably a faulty IC or a los contact on the rgb board.

When this happens the tv goes on protection because it detects the fault, that is the click that you hear.

RCA P46920 TV will not turn on, it makes a beeping noise.

Shorted horizontial output transistor q14401 -I think- and bad flyback transformer(high voltage transformer). The noise is the power supply starting and shutting down very quickly because of the shorted transistor.Very common problem, but some of the flybacks are no longer available from RCA.Sometimes you can use generic but questionable life on some of these.

Rca 52 in rear projection... start up menu always on

The setup menu will repeat until it is completed and/or something is hooked up.

On my TV it kept reoccurring until I connected up the wire from the roof antenna, even though I had cable already installed.

Check your manual for setup instructions or if you do not have one, Google the make, model number and "owners manual" to see one online.

Hope this helps. :)

Is Repair worth trying?

its smart to try to DIY if its only the sound that was lost.

but be very careful as such appliance have very intricate design. always be careful.

you can start by troiubleshooting the speaker itself then work down going to the wires of the speakers then the audio chip.

if you still have some questions, just post them here.

Tv wont work

This set's processor sees a problem and shutting the unit down for safety. There can be one of about 30 different problems that would cause this to happen. A technician has special computer interface that allows him to read errors in the processor. So this unit will have to be trouble shot further to narrow the problem down.
