Question about Cameras

My Canon EOS XTi keeps giving me an 05 error code which means that the pop up flash was impede . It does this every time even though I have made sure there is no obstruction at all. I tried gently to pop up the flash by hand but it won't budge and I am afraid to damage it by forcing it. Is there I lock on it somewhere that I don't know about? It says nothing at all about the issue in the operator's manual. Thanks, Bill

Dear Bill,
the Pop up flash activates a switch which sends it message that it is up. Now there can be few things which are stopping it from doing that.
1. Something has stuck, so small piece of anything,in the switch and not letting it operate.
2. Your Camera was subjected to some shock, which has damaged it.
3. The Switch itself has gone bad.
4. Your cameras' firmware(software) has gone bad
Now the solution to this is not a DO-IT-YOURSELF stuff. Digital camera are very delicate and only qualified techinican should be repairing it., to avoid a greater damage.
Please rate me appropriately if you are satisfied with my answer,in case, if you want any clarification please get back to me.

You need to take apart the camera, there is a motor and bearing moving the flash unit, and there is a problem in there , usually dust mixed with grease.

Lots of users have same problem
, call Canon support and complain, you may have it fixed if you insist, and the camera is not too old.

Connecting wire going to flash pop up unit and circuit board of charging usually got cracked / disconnected and this symptom appears.

Camera needs to be apart for physical check of flash high voltage.

If you know about camera repair then do it yourself or take it to near by tech person.

I think, if you follow this procedure, loosen the screws & wiggle the plate about, the switch pin will generlly loosen on its own. Then just tighten the screws back down and reisert the cover plate...

I have an err 05 with my Canon 7D

The err code 05 says the same, Flash could not pop up. The manual says, switch off the camera and switch on again.it could be this does not change anything. Just a little more chance, when you switch off the camera and remove the battery. And while it is out, just charge the battery. When you replace the battery and the error reoccurs best guess you have to visit the Canon service centre.
Make sure there is no mechanical obstruction, that keeps the flash from popping up.

Err 05 on Canon 7D

The error code is used to tell you the flash could not be raised. Check if anything is blocking the free movement of the pop up flash. First reaction should be, switch the camera off and then on again. Better though, after you switched off the computer remove the battery and charge it first, Then again try everything as before.
The manual says is the error persists, wroth down the error number and contact your nearest Canon Service Centre.

Cannon error 05

Error 05 means that something mechanically prevents built in flash to pop up. Ensure that nothing is blocking flash. Switch in P mode and press flash button to pop it up. If it does not pop up - try _gently_ to help it to pop up. If you succed in popping up the flash - check it for any dirt with can prevent flash from popping up.

Be aware that the built in flash does not pop up automatically in all picture modes. Try it when in the different modes (on the mode dial) and see what I mean. Does it popo up when manually opened ?, (small button on front left hand side of the viewing pentaprism/flash housing.)

Occasionally I get 'ERROR 5' appear on the display on my EOS 450D - it is suggested that the pop-up flash is being impeded, but I know that it isn't. What is happening?

This is a common canon mechanical error.

Most of there SLRS do this the release inside the pop up flash hangs either due to weak spring or release catch itself. If it hangs for even a split second you get error code.

Try This.
  1. Clean Flash Release & Apply wd-40 with a q-tip to moving parts. DO NOT SPRAY INTO CAMERA. Use oil lightly.
  2. Or Assist flash when it tries to p up by lifting on flash gently. Maybe one day canon will fix this problem.
PS this happens to even Brand new Canons.

The flash on my Canon EOS 400D won't work

Can you pull it up manually, Be careful when doing this but try opening it manually, it is possible that the catch for the flash is just stuck temporarily.

Error Code 05

Just because you've turned the camera off/on, doesn't mean it's been reset. This is a fairly easy procedure which involves either going into your setup menu and choosing "reset," holding down the menu key for 5 seconds, or, removing the batteries for a few minutes. It may be that the firmware loading got corrupted and the camera just needs to be "rebooted," which is something that turning it on/off won't accomplish. But after which, you should have the camera reset to factory default settings.

Another tip is to go to Canon's website and look for firmware updates. Download and install them.

Err 05 is when the internal flash is obstructed or the camera doesn't get an reply that the flash open sucessfuly. That should be covered in warranty if its an faulty "pop up flash." Call Canon at 1-800-OK-Canon or Email them at: https://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=SupportMailerAct&fcategoryid=215&modelid=9430

Talk to them and they will give you a more in depth stuff.

Built-in flash auto pop-up problem

Does the 'pop up' pop up? If it does and still says obstructed- closes it and pop it again If it still persists Canon customer support will advise the next move. If a repair price seems high you could perhaps get a separate flash if the camera accepts them.
