Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven
This is a GE Profile Spacemaker Microwave
Model # JVM1660WB008 Jan, 2003
As is my normal routine, I heated a 16 oz insulated plastic cup of water (3 minutes) for my morning coffee. About the time I thought it should be done, I heard a momentary loud hum from another room. It lasted about 2-3 seconds and then silence. I would liken the sound to that of a large motor straining to get started.
I returned to the kitchen to find the Microwave dead as a doornail. No lights, no clock, no fan, control panel inop. I checked houses's breaker panel and found nothing tripped. I plugged another device into the Microwave's outlet and it functioned normally.
Is this microwave "cooked" or is it likely that it has blown an internal fuse? If the latter, how do I get to the fuse to check it and what might have caused this?
With the symptoms you
have, I would most strongly suspect a shorted high voltage rectifier
diode, transformer, or capacitor or a bad magnetron.
If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.
There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.
At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:
(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)
