What is the best type of substrate for my boa?

An inert substrate is a type of substrate that does not alter the water chemistry. They are very important for people with fish that need soft water, especially those with discus fish.

Most aquarium substrates are made from one of the following three materials - fine gravel, sand, or clay.

Your best bet is to syphon out the substrate. The only problem with this is that you will end up syphoning out a large portion of water in the process.

As for amphibian substrates I would select one of the following types: paper towel, reptile carpet, alfalfa pellets, or Bed-A-Beast.

There are some types of substrates that are preferred for snakes including newspaper/paper towel, reptile carpeting and aspen.

I recommend using natural colored aquarium gravel as a substrate for your newt. Some people use moss; however I find that gravel works better. It can be purchased at almost any pet shop.
