Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook
My Acer 5100 (1 1/2 years old - Vista Home Premium) no longer lists/recognizes my cd/dvd rom drive (no, it's
not in my device manager or bios). Reinstalling won't work because there's no
listing to click on. I've removed and checked the drive, etc. Nothing.
The thing whirs and tries to read when I insert a disc, but it can't read, and the burn software claims "no device" present. Acer tech support suggested I try restoring the computer to "box condition," but, if I do, I'll lose all my installed software, and, without a cd/dvd drive to reinstall, I'll really be in trouble.
If I must replace the drive, I don't want an ACER disk drive -- for obvious reasons. Is there a compatible internal drive I can use?
You can check the BIOS to see if the drive is recognized and even attempt to boot from the drive using a bootable CD to verify it is functional (if using the Windows disc - just verify it reads - DO NOT REINSTALL)
If the drive works use the following to get the drive back in Windows:
Always backup your registry before editing and use care to find exact key!
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)
Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:
Quit Registry Editor.
NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.
