Hi,
As you said the refrigerator is 9 yrs old,so, it is very likely the gas has leaked and No you cannot do it yourself unless you have trained for it. Please take the help of a qualified technician. My recommendation is that you but a new refrigerator and save the OZONE layer(if your pocket permits).
Please rate me appropriately if you are satisfied with my answer,in case, if you want any clarification please get back to me.

Hey to me it sounds as if you need to re - gas the fridge. What happes is that the cold air is pumped in the freezer and a fan then sends it to the chill side. Since its cold , it means its not cold enough thats why is not freezing. try turning the temp control to the lowest setting and see if it helps. If not you will need to have it gased up.

As ginko correctly suggested, its the evaporator or dryer bottle (condenser) that needs changing.. Thats why you see ice forming on the coils. BTH after you change this it will have to be re gased.

Just a small amount of ice in the very corner of evaporator, and hte rest of the evaporator is a clean silver. this is an indication of LOW CHARGE, your unit has a leak and or restriction of coolant(134a). this a repair only to be done by a factory trained refrigeration specialist. i would call around to the local repair shops, for a quote of such a repair, where I am this would run you a minimum $350.

as far as model number its on a name plat on inside of refrig loner with all pertinent information, mod#-ser# (at least that s where the factory puts them) you may have removed there will also be a sticker on the very back panel of refrig that the factory uses to read as it goes down the production line (with the same info)

NO. , your system is sealed unlke your car that has charging ports, refrigeration sealed system repair requires reclaiming refrigerent, evacuating system of pollutant/contaminants, and recharging. As far as a do-it-yourselfer this is one job forthe professional. and your right that s a lot of money for a 9 yr old refrig

If the freezer is not cooling at all it is probably a faulty thermostat.

If it instead has poor cooling and does not reach temperatures low enough, that is frequently because of a problem with the evaporator system. Check if there is ice on the coils at the back of the fridge. If you find ice the problem wiswith evaporator system, or the condenser.

In this case try doing a complete defrost, and clean the dust from the condenser (unplug power first) using a hoover. The condenser unit is located at the back of the freezer on the lower side, remove dust in there and let the fridge do defrost.

If this does not work call a technician.

Freezer not freezing nor ice maker

Is the refrigerator still working? Is there any cold air in the freezer? If your compressor stopped working it would cause the refrigerator to be warm also. I had a problem with my amana refrigerator where the freezer wasn't getting cold enough and it was due to a condenser fan running intermittently. i replaced the fan and was back in business. i would check to make sure both your fan and your compressor are operating...

The cold water dispencer freezes in my amana bottom freezer refrigerator

The water line runs through the door and this is where it freezes. It's usually defetive insulation. Other than replace the door you may can tape or other wise fasten more insulation to the inside of the door in the area you think it's freezing in.

Amana bottom freezer problem

It sounds like the condenser coil might be freezing up. This happened to me on my bottom freezer. The cooling part of your fridge is only in the back of the freezer compartment. The cold air from the freezer blows up through a vent in the back to the fridge and comes out at the top. If the coils do not defrost (which is what happened with mine) the air flow is blocked by the ice and can't get to the fridge compartment. Your freezer will still be cold but your fridge won't. If you pull the plug on it and time things right you can defrost the coils but this will only postpone the problem. Both will work for awhile again until the coils ice up again. You can also pull out the freezer drawere and try to defrost the coil with a blow dryer. You have to disconnect the icemaker and pull out the back panel behind the freezer to get to it though.
