I thought the problem may have been caused by an application i recently
downloaded, Freevideo converter YouTube to Ipod that i have since
removed. Dell Hong Kong unwilling to help because warranty expired and without $$$ up front. Laptop is just 22 months old, now only runs on "safe mode". My search through internet reveals that this is one major problem with the inspiron 9400 that I am beginning to hate. Please help.

Re: Problems with Dell Inspiron 9400 Video Memory...
I agree sounds like bad video card. I have been told that the graphics cards are not as good as CPU's at slowing down so they don't get hot??? Is this correct??? Additionally the filters start to get quite dirty after 12 months or so - slowing air flow. I had a similar error but with 3 year warranty Dell did replace card.
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!

you will need to select your model, or put in your service tag (on the bottom of your notebook) and then look for the driver under audio in the list. from memory the first audio file should be the one you are after. click on download, on the right hand side.
once downloaded, run and install software, then restart the computer.
You can remove or change the Window's User oradministrator's password. You need access to a computer with Internet access todownload the Hiren's Boot CD and burn it onto a CD.Then insert this CD into the laptop/computer and boot upthe laptop/computer with the Hiren's CD and follow the instructions. There are very useful utilities CD and it a Linux boot CDwhich contains quite a lot of Utility programs including a password removalprogram.Click on one of these links todownload HIREN'S BOOTCD :-http://www.hirensbootcd.net/http://22.214.171.124/
The common advice is to go to cyberlink, pay and then download windvd, however there is a better option.
Download VLC which is a tremendous video player (plays every video format) that will play DVDs. It's free too :-)

Dell Laptop with bios or hard drive password set ? Unlock your dell laptop using the link below if it display a message that says "this computer system is protected by a password authentication system, you cannot access the data on this computer without the primary or administrator password, when you turn on the computer. This message is what you get if the BIOS is protected by a password. or you get system disabled
-check the system battery information and charger information of the computer; restart the computer, while the computer is booting up, press F2 repeatedly; check "battery info" -if it stated ac adapter = unknown device ; update the BIOS (-visit support.dell.com
NOTE:other computers may have different BIOS, if it is not the same you may have to consult manufacturer -click on drivers and downloads -click or choose by service tag -download the BIOS and install it on the computer) -check information after updating; if same message AC adapter = unknown device; call manufaturer for a replacement AC adapter, if status has changed it is a battery problem or motherboard, contact manufacturer to test battery
Do a recovery first and if you are still getting a blue screen on this 1525 call dell and ask for a replacment do not go any further in trying to repair it yourself as anything you do would just make matters worse if its out of warrenty then the only thing you can do is try:
1. clean the unit if there is any dust
2. try new memory modules
3. run a memory diagnostic on it using windos diagnostics
4. recover the operating system.
the error: (Under this test, results show Error code 5300: 0119, which different comments for different parameters) Msg: Detected a failure while writing and reading video memory. (e.g.) Video mode: Dh (320 x 200 16) Address A002Ch, expected to read Oh, but read 1Dh instead *
indicates the video card has failed and need to be replaced.
This solution is totally incorrect. He is having the problem that many of us face with the GeForce Go 7900 GS and the Inspiron 9400. There is a known issue with eventual overheating and the video card going bad. This is specific to the single-pipeline chip, in which their is a new dual-pipeline style that fixes the cooling/overheating issue that eventually fries the video chip. Dell has not 100% took ownership of this. I am on my fourth fried video card (thank god for the 3-year warranty I got) in which they have previously replaced with the single-pipeline style. This time they are finally replacing the laptop with either a new Inspiron 9400 (better be dual-pipeline chip) or a NEW equivalent laptop.
