Question about Panasonic NN-S541 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Panasonic NN-S541BF (2001)

When I push the start button it will make an arcing sound for a few seconds and then in a few more seconds it will do it again. On the second time the lights in the house will flicker and then the microwave will work fine. Is it a lost cause??
Thanks, Scott

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck somewhere in the cavity of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

It may also be in the area of the turntable support, coupler, or motor.

The waveguide cover (also called a spatter shield) is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

In some models it is a larger stirrer cover type made of thicker plastic in the ceiling of the oven.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced. It provides important protection for the magnetron.

The best place to order Panasonic parts is Tritronics. Or you can call them toll-free at 866-779-5835.

From your description it does indicate a magnetron problem, you would be further ahead replacing the microwave oven when you consider the expense of the repair involved.

Panasonic NN-H264SF Microwave oven starts with a chirp

No I dont think so, check that the wheels on the rotating ring are not seized up and dragging. These will make a chirp type sound as it starts to rotate or even when it finally comes to rest.

The microwave starts, then stops after a few seconds, and smells

Remove the cover after pulling the power plug. Check the transformer and large capacitor for signs of overheating. If they look ok, then remove the sheet metal wave-guide from the area where the energy enters the cooking cavity. Under the wave guide is a fan-like device called a stirrer that has a plastic bearing. This stirrer bearing is commonly arced over (when the oven is operated with nothing to heat in it). Usually the bearing looks good, but has arced internally. Replace the stirrer as a unit. The machine can be operated with the case off and a cup of water for a load, but keep you hands clear. Look for smoke.

Panasonic microwave NN-S541BF stops after 3 seconds

If the digital programmer circuit / controller does not get a feedback signal from the inverter for a period of 3 seconds, the controller will stop the cook cycle.

In most cases, this is a problem with the controller, inverter or magnetron.

Due to the lethal voltages used and produced, I do not recommend that an inexperienced person work on these.

I would recommend that you contact your nearest Panasonic-authorized servicer.
