Check the to make sure burnt and broken solder joints on the mainboard. However, since you're getting some power to some of the unit's functions, I doubt this is the problem but it is always good to check.

Second, make sure the mute button isn't engaged. I know it sounds stupid but I've made this mistaken myself before.

If either of those doesn't work, you need to take the unit in to a qualified repair service for a bench test.

Give audio signal to its AUX input and check any sound in speakers.

I would recommend to have service manual to rectify / diagnose problem systematically.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, pls to check the continuity of the speaker/speaker wires. Each speaker should measure 4 or 8 ohms but never 0 or infinity. Additionally, pls check:

  • do you hear any clicking sound;
  • double check the audio source, tuner, CD;
  • try disabling/normal mode any sound processing.
At this stage, your best bet would be to perform voltage and resistance checks while referencing a service manual or at least the schematic diagram with voltage readings. Other possibilities (to be verified with the diagram) are:
  • power supply voltages;
  • source selector, possibly a digital/logic switching.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Do not replace any component if you do not have any evidence that is defective. You may make things worse.

Look for bulged capacitors, trace of burnt and broken solder joints on the mainboard, check also that the volume variable resistor is working, read impedance.

    More , if you have no sound through the headphone port, check the preamp circuits, the final section of the amp is usually fine, as headphone signal is only preamped.

    If you hear a clicking sound, that means the unit is on protection, if you do not know what protection is , that means that you should not service this unit, as you can cause more damage, and make the unit dangerous for yourself and others.

    The clicking sound is the safety switch as the protection circuit detected a fault and kicked in.

    If you have never seen a unit on protection before, that means that when you replaced main IC module and the two transistors next to it (on what basis?) you probably damaged the unit more.

    I am telling you this in complete sincerity, even if this unit was to be scrapped, you should not service electronics without taking a course or practicing in a workshop under supervision.

    Sincerely.

    G.

    You can buy the service manual download here for a small fee: Sharp - CDES770 Service Manual.

    See the section troubleshooting diagrams.

    "when i remove the speaker wire or one side of it, the little fan at the back begins to spin" : probably a short, check that no wiring is shorting to the chassis. Remove the speakers, if one of the speakers had shorted inside you get protection mode, and unit not starting.

    There is no free download for the service manual, and you are having support from more than one qualified technician, here, and also from few good users.

    I am starting to think that you are also are trying to get a free service from us. Is this true?

    I will try to block any possible refund, I can see you are not a technician but you did a lot of repairs.

    Let me know if you need any further help, thanks for using Fixya.

    Dear user, I saw that you did so many complicate repairs on many different devices, then I wonder why when I talk to you, I have the sensations that you do not have much practice.

    The service manual here costed few $$ (I think $3) that is more than a reasonable amount Service Manual..

    I must also tell you that the information given on Fixya must normally not be shared on web or published elsewere.

    Thanks.

    Hi there , I have seen the original problem here:

    http://www.fixya.com/support/t1220576-sh...

    To start you need the service manual Service Manual. You can get from the link for a couple of dollars.

    Then follow my advice:

    This

    "The fan spins only if i take out the red or black speaker wire and as soon as i insert it, it stops again."

    means that either one of the speakers is shorting inside, or there is something shorting to the chassis, where the output board connecting to the speakers is in contact with the chassis.

    Try different speakers first.

    Look for any object that can carry electricity and is shorting to the chassis, that was the original problem. check for example control knobs and connection boards.

    The idea of replacing the IC was crazy, probably the original problem was just a faulty speaker or a short, now there may be more faults.

    I do not know if you are practicing with electronics , or helping someone else, but a bad serviced electronic can endanger your life.

    Hope this had benn helpful in one way or the other.

    Bye, and good luck.

    One last note id about your DIY activity.

    I think your willing to learn is a great quality, but you cannot go straight to practice and do complicate repairs on electronics, like replacing a flyback inverter on TV.

    Try to get a good repair course as soon as possible, or try entering into a local workshop as an apprentice, using the skills you got doing this first repairs, doing this job you need to have the necessary theory, before starting to practice.

    Hope I did not seem to rude, but that is the truth.

    Here you get some general hints and tips.

I would like to turn off the the display which runs on my sharp xlhp500 mini hi fi system when the system is turned off

Most electronics now have clock displays on them that do not turn off by the off and on switch of the device. i suppose that the manufacturers determined that we would want the on all the time and do not provide any means of turning them off.

The solution is to have a switch that turns the power off on that receptical that powers the device. Of course you could just pull the plug, but that is not all too satisfactory. You could invest in a system called X10, in which modules connect into your outlet, you connect the system into the module and you use a remote switch to cut the power off or on. This is afairly expensive system and maybe be over kill. see: http://www.thehomeautomationstore.com/?GG042508x10gener4&gclid=CPvCx5zKqKYCFQl_5QodhFPHoA

for a detail of the system.

For your operation, the simplest solution is to purchase a small line switch that goes on the back of the power cord and breaks the line when the switch is rotated. see

If your head phone is connected to your system there will be no out put to the speakers. Please remove the head phone and try. If this does not solve your problem then there is a possibility of defective audio output IC.
