Question about GE Refrigerators
Our side by side is still working, sounds normal, yet the system check display is showing "de". That code says to keep the doors closed as much as possible and to call a repairman. We can NOT afford a repairman these days so can you please tell us how we can fix it ourselves? Thank you
This may or may not be the fix, but I had a problem with my GE Profile TFX24PR sibe-by-side. Water was leaking from the ice maker water fill tube into the back of the freezer, onto the cooling coils. This would cause the freezer to go into extended defrost and the freezer and fridge would warm up. If you see ice inside the freezer, especially around the outside of the ice bin, or odd chunks of ice in the ice bin, turn off the ice maker and/or the source water supply and see if the problem clears up. If the ice buildup is especially heavy, you may need to remove your food, and unplug and manually defrost/thaw the freezer. You may want to remove the cooling coil cover, that is the back wall of the inside of the freezer. Mine had five screws holding a thin sheet of metal, three at the top and two near the bottom. Once this is off you can see the cooling coils. Be careful not to bump or scrape the coils. At this point I found about a quart of ice frozen on top of the coils in one big chunk, stuck to many wires. I carefully broke off what ice I could, and used a hair dryer to melt the rest.
If this is the problem, then you will need to replace the ice maker water fill tube. This is a time consuming job, you have to disassmble the fan compartment on the back wall of the freezer behind the ice maker to get to the fill tube connector. Once you get there it's easy to reach and it just pushes into the connector. In my case, I just reversed the ends and pushed it back in for a snug fit. You may want to consider using a sealer to prevent it from happening again any time soon.
