Question about Philips CDR778 2-Disc CD Recorder

1 Answer

Disc won't initialize or record, keeps saying no disc or opc erro

I have a philips dual deck cd (cdr-778) recorder, and I am trying to record from my digital 8 track, and I put in an 80 minute cd-r music cd, and it shows (no disc). I know it's not upside down, and I have tried at least ten new cd's and still the same thing. Other times inconsistently it will say initializing, but then after a while it will say opc error. So it goes back and forth between those two readings. I have used this alot in the past and never remember having this problem. Is it the wrong cd, or do you think there is a malfunction? Please give me some insight on what else to try. Thanks Shannon Tormoen.

I suggest you try cleaning the lens...

If the wrong disc was inserted, say a music disc, there would surely be a message to that effect. If no such message is displayed I would guess the unit is faulty.

Wrond Disc

The disc you need to use to record is "PHILIPS CDR MUSIC". That is what it should day on the top of the disc. On the left side of the disc, it should say "DIGITAL AUDIO RECORDABLE". I spent a lot of money buying the wrong discs before finally finding the correct one. So I know your frustration!

Won't record

I've just spoken to a friend who also has one of these older Philips recorders & he has the same problem.

As per my previous post, he fixed his problem by locating old stocks of blanks. New audio discs seem to have been manufactured & optimised for fast writing speeds (up to 32x speed) & this is causing the problem (you can't write at x1 or x2 speed to these new speedy discs).

Trying a few different brands of discs to try out is a whole lot cheaper than a repair. I suggest when you find a brand that works, you stock up on these discs as it seems they will become ever rarer.

Good luck!

RECORD DROP OUT

Just bought this CDR 570 and not use yet.

Reading the instruction manual - yes, life experience has taught me some really useful stuff! -

Under 'Discs for recording' on page 7 it says at end of section

IMPORTANT:
To ensure proper working of the set we recommend the use of PHILIPS audio CDR and audio CDRW discs only'
Roughly translated I read this to me - 'don't blame us if the set don't work using other (non-compatible) discs' !!
