My desktop will not detect my iPhone hotspot unless I plug my iPhone into the computer

Hi Whitney,
I was able to locate manual and a troubleshooting guide.
Summary: Your modem only supports 802.11b standard, which limits the
throughput to max. 11Mbps (compare to 802.11g = 54Mbps, 802.11n = 108
Mbps). In other words: your connection is only about 10% of the speed
compared to a wired connection via Ethernet cable (100 Mbps). So - if
you can - you should try to use a wired instead of a wireless
connection, but you have to decide what makes is more important to you:
having no cable and you can be away from the modem or the connection
speed.
This also means - and that is in regards to APremkumar's solution -
that you can skip all 802.11n adapters (this would just be a waste of
money). Since you will not find an adapter that only connects to a
class b network, look for something like "802.11b/g".
An example page is here.
You can choose between an internal (PCI card) or external (USB adapter)
solution. Both are ok and the decision depends on the availablity of a
free USB port on your Dell and your comfort of opening the computer
case or not. (You can always come back here and ask for help;-)
If you have any more questions, please let me know - I'm happy to help!

The first thing I would try would be to reset the card, by removing the cover (if you are comfortable), removing the card from the slot and reinserting in the slot or moving the card to another slot (if there is an identical slot). If that doesn't work, replace the wireless card either with another wireless card or a USB wireless network adapter (external adapter that connects to a USB port). Good luck.

make sure that there are no weak batteries. try to pair again the gadgets. if same problem happened call your computers manufacturer and have these devices replaced.

If you have anything you could try the internet on and see if it happens to that machine as well, that will help you narrow it down.
If it does effect the other machine, it's likely your router.
To narrow further whether it's your router or potentially your modem, plug in your computer to a network cable and straight to your modem. See if you have the disconnection issue now that you're not wireless.
If the issue is only isolated to your machine, while you're wireless...it's likely your card.
And....as always, run some virus software to ensure people aren't just making stuff to make your life harder.

Try cleaning the ram or if you have 2 ram in 2 slots try with one at a time. if the problem still exists i think formating the system will fix the problem.

Julia, does your desktop computer have a wireless adapter card, with an antenna, or a USB wireless device plugged into a USB port? You need one of these to 'communicate' with the iPhone's wireless capability. 1)http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/... 2)http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/... 3) Or you have to hardwire it. (Plug iPhone directly to computer with USB cable) Post back in a Comment. Regards, joecoolvette
I will need to get a wireless router or USB device. Thanks!
You're welcome!
