Thanks for the reply, I tried the site but still no luck, the system says it is working ok, i've tried everything like cables, all the ovious stuff. Is it worth a registry cleaner or do you think it'd be money better spent taking it to tech guys perhaps? Thanks again for your reply ;-)

Try going into the setup routine and see if the sound is turned on in the BIOS

Don;t give up yet. I think the regestery cleaner woudl be a waist of you time and money. Their are plenty of frre one out ther that work just find but I don't believ that to be your problem. If you don;t mind , try this:
Start -  right click mouse on My Computer - Properties - Hardware - Device manager - Sound Video and game control or Sound. Tell me what drivers you have and hopefully what sound card you have. Else look into the computer and read the name and model off of the sound card itself. Worth a shot.

My sound periodically goes out. drivers are up to date

If your sound card is a separate component meaning not a (on board sound built into the motherboard) then you may try removing the sound card and cleaning the socket out with a air can and then clean the contacts with cleaning alcohol then plug it back into the socket and see if this resolves your intermittent sound problem. If it continues then I suggest looking to see if the cooling fan on the card has stopped running especially if yo have lost sound again. If the fan has quit working then it is time for a new sound card. If you have on board sound then you probably will need a new motherboard as there is no way for you to fix the problem.
I hope this helps,
bob

I have a MSI KT4 Ultra Motherboard 6590 and after

Hi! It's not uncommon for a new installation of Windows to render a PC mute. It's happened to me on several occassions, but do not dispair.
After one round or two of Windows Updates, your device will be detected as missing its drivers and they will be downloaded and installed for you.
This happens with generic motherboards which use less known built-in devices such as the sound card, the video card, etc. Should your motherboard be an Intel, Asus, or other popular name brand, you run less of a chance to get this problem.
Please run Windows Update a couple of times, or until you're satisfied your machine is up to date.
Good luck!

No sound after installing windows xp

Hello!

Your motherboard holds an AC'97 sound chip, so the standard drivers from Realtek should work just fine :)

u must know what is kind of ur sound driver
if u have original cd driver
try to unstall old driver or try to install winxp again may be conflict on your operating system
if not sucess so
may u have problem with your ic of your sound card if you familure with electronics
from old boards you get it and change or
you buy sound card from any shop and install it and in setup you make disable for sound if your sound is built in
at all you can find in market usp sound card small size and its price not too mutch
but first u must be sure no mute for volume control on task bar or ur speaker working good or its connecter not bad by testing it by connecting head phone as example with your computer

check device manager desription, and error log.. if all normal (i know its sounds stupid) but make sure nothing ismuted, if there is the third parts realtek aidio manager there, make sure that hasnt muted anything.. if everything is normal and still nothing, try un-installing drivers completely in devce manager, restarting system, and re-installing them again..
