I have read your posts about the PS2 Slimline laser replacement and I appreciate your information. My PS2 is not a slimline, but will not read the CD. It just spins and tries.
I am not experienced with small electronics, but I opened it up and it looks to me like the laser is trying to focus. It is moving in and out, over and over.
Additionally, the plastic clip that attaches the laser to the spinning screw to move it horizontally appears to be failing to grip the screw and move the laser. When I turn that screw by hand, the laser does not move, except sometimes the laser "jumps" like it is trying to move with the screw.
Do you have any suggestions?
I have the same problem!! The problem started I inserted a SPECOPS PS1 disc in to my PS2. I've played it a lot of times before. But once it just stuck on the loading screen and didn't proceed to the game. I pressed the reset button and after that It doesnt read any disc. It tries to read the disc but no use. It shows DISC read error after some time
IT IS THE EYE. the eye th the little shiny piece that you can bairly see once the tray comes out.you might have put a disk in at a wrong position and scratched the eye. replacing it might be what to do, but i would check first.

When your PS2 starts to have problems reading silver backed discs you could be experiencing one of 2 different problems:
Your laser or disc is dirty (clean off your disc with a soft cotton cloth, and clean the laser in your PS2 with a cd drive cleaning cd)
The laser in your PS2 is going, you will need to take it into a shop to have it repaired, replace the laser or disc drive yourself (this will void the warranty if you have one) or get a new or different PS2.
You might have bad laser lens, try to play a ps2 cdrom format disc or a cd music.. if it would like to play.. the laser lens need to be replacement.. you may consider sending it back to Sony for repair. You can call SONY support at 1-800-345-7669.
Hopefully this be of some help/idea. Pls post back should you need additional information, and also Show your Appreciation, to help other USER.
ps2 slimlines had as problem with doing the lasers .this was a fault of over voltage to the laser lense.sony did bring out a mod for this.you would have to replace the laser .they are not all that dear.make sure you get the right one for your model
hello pauldonp...if this is an early version of the slimline they had a problem with over voltage which inturn took out the laser.your only option may be to replace the laser . sony did bring out a mod for this..i preferr the real old version of the ps2 as they had all separate boards and if one went faulty you didnot have to replace the lot ,also the lasers were a lot cheaper than the later models .in the slim lines the lasers are not all that expensive .they do take a bit of setting up as you have to know the ohms setting on the laser for each model..hope this helps
if your console is slim-pstwo, you have bad laser & need replacement with new laser. for ps2 chubby You can attempt to adjust it with the little white wheel, but this is not always successful. left for cd format & right for dvd format. hope this help.
