Question about Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Hard Drive I have a new hard drive. It is second hand but new to my computer. When i turn it on (the computer, with the hd correctly in) it makes a funny tune three times. Then it says oporating system not found. I try to install windows but when it has finished loading the drivers, it freezes and i get a blue screen saying "Your computer has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer) or something like that. Does anyone know what is wrong and how to fix it?

Hi I use Maxtor HD's and IBM Deskstars also, one of my pc's has 4 500 gb SATA drives [not in raid mode] and have had some problems also.
If you are using 2 drives then one should be set as master and one as slave. Same thing goes for cd/dvd roms, master and slave, and use 80 wire ribon cables. If you are using just one drive and the settings in your bios, and master or slave and what drive boots up the machine.
if using only 1 drive set it to master [in SATA it does not matter you can leave them all as masters, and only if the cd.dvd's are SATA also, if not they have to be set up as master & slave, set the bios to boot from cd drive 1st 2nd is your HD and last is if you still use them a floppy. On boot with the OS CD in the drive boot the pc and it will start the instalation of windows, delete any partitions, format the drive [NTFS] NOT FAT OR FAT32, and you should be able to do a fresh instal. As with 2nd hand drives as they were used on another pc they have hidden files left on the drive [unless the person that gave it to you has prepared the drive to do a proper instal if not windows gives you the option to delete, create and format the drive, to be ready to continue to instal windows.

the problem could be from your USB. The USB of your computer might not be powering the drive.

Secondly, the hard drive wire that passes from the computer to the external drive.

Lastly, the Hard drive case could be defective and not make the drive power on.

Therefore, connect the external hard drive to another computer, in other to be sure whether the problem is from your computer's usb port or from the hard drive. This will let us know where to focus our attention.

Let me know what happens thereafter.

Take care.

Disk Managemet says my hard drive "Not Initialized". Windows cannot see it in My Computer. How can I recover my data?

let me get this straight... you can boot-up and windows does start. So your system is seeing the hard drive well enough to get you into window, but once there it refuses to see the hard drive it is based on??? Or by some chance is there a second hard drive which you are attempting to access? If that is the case you need to #1 see if it listing in your bios menu which you can access during start up, but even before that you need to make sure that the second HD is jumpered to slave mode if your running off the second hookup of a dual IO cable, if on the other hand you have it plugged into the second plug on the motherboard make sure you have it set to master. If that is all set then.
#2 reboot your computer and log into your bios menu look to see if your HD is listed if not using your +/- keys once you have the first open slot highlighted use the +/- keys to run through you options when you see auto check your bios control legend on the bottom hit the button which activates it your HD should show up in that selection area.

Lacie 1tb ext hd. drive does not show in disk

Your external drive has 2 parts, the hard drive, which is just a normal hard drive you would find in any computer, and the usb bridge, which connects the hard drive interface (either ide or usb) to the usb or firewire or esata or whatever. Sounds like one of these are bad. Does the computer see the bridge? it should show up as a mass storage device in device manager and the safely remove usb devices dialog. If not, then get a new enclosure for the drive. These range from 25-100 dollars. If the bridge does show up, take apart the enclosure and pull the drive out and try hooking it up as a second drive in your computer. If it works there, then you need a new enclosure. If not, then you need a new drive.

Cannot get external hard drive to work

- Make sure that the hard drive (HD) is properly connected to the computer.

- Try connecting it to a different computer to make sure that the HD is the problem.

- Check the Disk Management in your computer to see if the HD could still be detected. Once detected, reformat the HD and it should work again.

To check the Disk Management:

NOTE: Make sure that the external HD is connected and turned ON.

1. Right-click "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" icon (Vista)
2. Select Manage and click on "Disk Management".
3. From the Disk Management, you will see a drive letters
4. Write down all the drive letters and then disconnect the Maxtor HD from the computer.
5. If there's a drive letter that disappears, then that is your Maxtor HD.
6. Reconnect the Maxtor HD and reformat it. You may right-click the drive letter and there's an option to format the HD.

If you're hearing a clicking sound while the HD is turned on, mostly, it's already defective.

Have a great day!
