Yes you can use synthetic oil. Use any brand you want.
for summer use use 30w
in winter (if you use for snow blowing) use 5w30.

I have a Briggs stratton 14 hp ohv I/c quiet model 287707. I had a guy change the oil & he put 10W30 synthetic oil in it. Now it smokes white smoke really bad. I think he put the wrong oil in

There is a very real difference between 30W and 10W30 oil. Whether it's synthetic or not probably doesn't matter. If you have the literature that came with the mower, it will tell you the recommended engine oil.
If they put in the wrong oil, they should make it right. You shouldn't have to pay twice for an oil change. It could be burning oil, since 10W30 is a lower viscosity than 30W. I would have them change it again, and see if it stops smoking.

What type of oil do I use for Craftsman 42" Briggs & Stratton 17.5 hp Gas Powered Riding Lawn Tractor for oil change

Only use SAE 30 if using conventional oil. Briggs is real specific about that. I highly recommend using synthetic oil in ALL lawn equipment. You can use a multi-viscosity oil like SAE 10W-30 if you use synthetic, but straight 30 weight if using conventional. The brand is up to you.

What fuel is best and oil

On a lawn mower small engine which is air cooled I highly recommend you use a 100% synthetic oil in 10w30 weight. Any major brand will be fine just make sure it is a full synthetic. On the gasoline use 87 octane regular. Higher octane fuel will provide no benefit and it a waste of money.

I have a Honda GX 160 5.5 Power washer Model Number: CM2403. What kind of oil should i be using in the engine?

If it has a Briggs engine then use SAE 30 oil. If you run synthetic (which I highly recommend), then SAE 30 or muti-viscosity oil like 10W-30 can be used, but if using conventional oil, only SAE30.

I use synthetic oil in my cars and want to know if it is recommended or not in my new YTH2348 riding mower?

Hi, synthetic oil is not recommended in your lawn tractor. The reason for this is its basically too good for the load and conditions your mower engine operates under. Using synthetic oil would lead to your engine glazing the bore and consuming excessive oil. Regards Phil.

What type of oil do I use in my Craftsman lawn tractor -model 917.287320

Use SAE 10W30. I recommend a 100% synthetic oil in any air cooled engine. Change the oil once a year or every 75 hours whichever comes first. The brand is your choice as all major brands are good. I personally use Pennzoil.

Just wondering if my ariens st350 snow machine uses detergent or non-detergent oil? Thanks

Hello. Actually, Many snow thrower manufacturers now recommend using synthetic motor oil particularly for subzero temperatures. Synthetic oil, such as Mobil 1 doesn’t contain any of the waxes that cause conventional oils to congeal in cold temperatures. As a result, synthetic oil makes starting easier and also prevent parts from running dry when a cold engine first starts. Synthetic oil also has higher film strength and stands up to high temperatures better than conventional oils. You’ll pay more for a quart for a full synthetic and you still have to change it as often as conventional oils, but you are giving your snow thrower engine the best chance for a long trouble free life.
