The error is a paper axis shut down. There may be abnormal friction in the paper motion mechanism. Check for seized needle rollers or anything that would stress the paper motion motor. The problem could be the paper motion motor itself. If you remove the motor, you should be able to turn the motor freely. It is a stepper motor and you will feel the effects of the permanent magnets in the motor and will feel like it has a crunchy bearing. That is normal. If it requires a lot of force to move the motor shaft, replace the motor. If all seems normal, run the PAPER ADVANCE calibration. All this stuff is in the manual which can be downloaded at: www.lpscomputer.com/ec/manuals.htm

Parts are available at: http://www.lpscomputer.com/c-622-designjet-5000-5500.aspx

Error code E161-403F

I have had two of my Canon plotters give this error.message, I had to manually move the carriage unit and replace the printhead. On one of the plotters the error message returned, on the second plotter I was able to go into service mode where it asked me to replace the printhead. I just went though the motions since the printhead was brand new and I was able to get the plotter to function correctly.

Tried upgrading Canon iPF710 firmware from 1.35 to 1.40 on 2 separate plotters and received a !Error E196-4040 Call for service message. Plotter will not come to a Online status.

Power off and unplug the printer for several minutes. On power on the printer had the same "ERROR E196-4040 Call For Service" after Initialization. Next start the printer in Service Mode, turn on the printer while holding down the [Paper Source/Feeder Selection] button and [Information] button until Initializing appeared in the display. An "S" will appear in the upper right of the version display. Power down and do a normal Power On and the printer should do a normal initialization and came On Line.

I think the problem is not the computer. You shoud check the plotter by running the test print without the computer. When plotter's power is on, press Setup and Cancel keys simultaneously. If it does not print, then the plotter need repair.
According to your descriptions, there is System Error Code shown on your control panel. when the lights on for Ready+Cartridges+Data (DKL), it may have 9 possible causes referred by Service Manual page 2-7. You can check all these 9 items to see which one causes the problem.
