Question about Gateway GM5084 PC Desktop

Just got a gateway gm5084 for my children... wireless not working

Hi there would like some help if anyone knows why my #1- host computer (using Vista and Linksys WRT160N) is unable to network with the #2- Gateway gm5084 wireless connection (using XP). Is it because I deleted the driver - original Linksys?? from #2? Is it due to two operating systems? Does anyone know? I have been spending my entire evening until now working on this.... :(

If both computers, using their respective "wireless" connections, can web-surf the Internet at the same time, then your basic home-network is properly functioning, at the "hardware" level, and thus you have a "software" problem, if you open "Network Connections" on one computer, and you cannot "browse other computers", and/or if your computer cannot "see" the other computer.

Are you "sharing" any folders/printers on either computer?

    Firmware update?

These products use the current draft version of the upcoming 802.11n standard. Compatibility with other and future products is not guaranteed. However, such problems are rare and it is likely that a firmware upgrade after the specification is finalized will solve any problems (consider if you feel confident performing such an update). Also, while 802.11n is designed to be backwards compatible with 802.11g, 802.11b and 802.11a, it had been noticed that -n can interfere with the operation of current 802.11b and g products.

The yet-to-be finalized 802.11n standard is based on MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) technology, which takes advantage of multiple
data streams. This concept was considered a problem until someone figured out how to harness these many streams of data to improve both throughput and range. As of mid-2008 draft 4.0 of the 802.11n standard has been approved, and most of the major wireless networking vendors are offering routers and adapters based on the updated spec. Again, the differences are not such that the bulk of earlier equipment will be affected in its ability to work with the more current versions, and firmware updates should take care of any problems. Final ratification of the standard is currently projected for 2009.

You have driver issue. Keep it simple and just go out and get a wireless usb adapter that works with your OS and you are good to go.

I added a new video card and the monitor wont come on

1) Did you plug the monitor into the graphics card?

(Hey, happens! Sometimes in our zealousness to see what that baby will do, we mess up a little)

2) Did you install the Drivers? First?

These will be on the installation disk that comes with the graphics card.
Recommend installing the software from the disk FIRST, then turn the computer off, unplug from power, install the graphics card.

3) Does the graphics card require additional power?

Some graphics cards will not receive enough power, from the graphics expansion slot they are inserted into.

[Gateway GM5084 uses a PCI Express x16 slot, for best graphics.

I can't log in to configure my router. I tried loging in using 192.168.1.1 but its not working an I don't know why. Help please

You may need to double check if the router is giving the correct IP address. You can this by doing the following:

1. Go to Control Panel.
2. Got to Network Connections
3. Right click on the the connection that you are using to connect to the router, wired or wireless. Then go to Status.
4. Go to the Support tab. Check the IP address and the Default Gateway, it's the Default Gateway that will tell what is the correct router IP address.

After you verify the correct IP address, you test if your computer is still communicating with the router. To do this, do the following:

1. Click Start go to Run and type "cmd" and then hit return.
2. In the command prompt, type this command "ping 192.168.1.1" or ping whatever IP address you will see in the support tab for Default Gateway.

You should get four replies if your computer is communicating with the router. If you not make sure that you disable the firewall/s in your computer. You can also use a different computer.

Computer won't recogniz 2WIRE 2701HG-B. Need drivers

The site says:

You do not need to install the 2Wire Wireless Client Manager if your computer contains a built-in client manager (such as Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Vista), which will work in conjunction with any 2Wire wireless adapters

If you have a driver un-install it and have windows find it for you. That is there recomendation. It says the driver disk they used to use was for the old operating systems.

I need the small original bios file (.bin) for my GM5084.

I would not despair yet, Bill. I suggest you go to the Gateway site again and locate the correct BIOS file for your system. If this is a file that you burn into your BIOS after booting with a floppy disk with an OS on it, then you should be Ok. Just follow the instructions.
However, if this utility can be run from your OS, then I would pursue the option you're after on this posting.

Computer remains in sleep mode to conserve electricity

This is a known issue in Vista. Computers going into hibernation and then not waking up. I believe it was fixed with the Service Pack 1 distribution, but I'm not 100% certain.
I would recommend that you go into the power options from the control panel and disable hibernation. You can tell the computer to turn off the monitor and the hard drive after a period of time, but just don't leave hibernation enabled.
