Lost all volume? were you listening to audio on full volume and it quit?
Do you hear a popping noise?(usually indicates blown speakers)

Have you ensured that volume is turned on and that your speakers are not muted by both the program you're using and windows?

Have you checked device manager to ensure that it isn't a driver issue?

Static only

If you have anything electronic move it away from the speakers it can cause interference. Then clean the plug for the speakers into the machine as well as the port. The way to do this is with electrical cleaner. Put some on the end of the jack and with the computer and speakers off spin it in the jack to clean it.

Did you try reinstalling the sound driver for the speakers? That should work.

I have purchased from Walmart 2.0 CH USB POWEREDSPEAKER SYSTEM.  UC-280.On plugging in the usb cable I get nothing from theToshbia laptop (running Vista).  The power light onthe speakers does...

Did you get a software CD with this speaker set? Check the box and ensure that it says it's compatible with Windows Vista. I'm not aware of any speaker sets that wouldn't be, but it's always a possibility.

Also, more importantly, plug in the speakers before turning the laptop on. Many powered speaker sets will not work if you plug them in while the system is on.
