Mac OS X will not re-start

In system preferences I clicked start from network rather than the HD. I can't restart OS X as it keeps flashing a world pic or a file with ? mark. How can I revert this?

Hi there DocMerengue,

When rebooting at the bong press and hold the Alt key until the drives appear on screen. Select your main boot drive and off you go. Now in OSX goto the startup disk in the prefs and set it back to the hard drive instead of Network and you're done.

What does flashing globe on white screen on mac meanmacbook pro


If by flashing globe you mean spinning globe (often a colored beach ball), there are several possible reasons. The spinning beach ball happens when a operating system command cannot be completed. The computer is frozen/stuck in a process that it can't complete.
Most often the cause is faulty or missing information on the hard drive. Running Disk Utility will often fix it. You may need to start the computer from your OS install disk and rather than install find Disk Utility in the pull down menu and run it on your hard drive.
The spinning ball could also be caused by insufficient RAM memory to even run the operating system. It could also be caused by hardware problems which can be diagnosed with the Apple Hardware Test found on the disks sold with the machine.
If you truly mean a flashing round globe, I have never seen such a figure. Flashing question marks or flashing circle with a slash through it means the mac cannot find a bootable hard drive. Your hard drive may have died or become corrupted. To see if you hard drive is defective, again run Disk Utility by booting off an install CD or another hard drive with a compatible MacOSX operating system to diagnose.
Try running the repair disk program under the general tab of the Disk Utility program.

Airport sign in keep saying wrong password


Delete Preferred Network(s)
  • System Preferences > Network > Select AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
  • Under Preferred Network, use the minus button to delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list
Delete AirPort Keychain Entries (Note: only applies if you connect to AirPort/Time Capsule routers)
  • Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in /Applications/Utilities
  • Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
  • Restart, or log out then back in.
Add Preferred Network(s)
  • System Preferences > Network > Select AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
  • Under Preferred Network, click on the plus button to add any preferred network(s).
  • Restart or log out then back in.

A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac Symptoms

If you see a flashing question mark when you start your Mac, it's probably because it can't find the system software it needs to start up. Usually, all you have to do to get your Mac back up and running is remind it where its software is.
Resolution

If your computer starts up normally after a brief delay, you probably just need to reselect the startup disk in Startup Disk preferences. It's normal to see the flashing question mark when a startup disk has not been selected. In most cases, reselecting the startup disk is all that is required to resolve the issue.

Sometimes, your computer may not start beyond the flashing question mark.

Tip: If your computer has a gray screen (with no flashing question mark) startup issue, see Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup.

Check the mouse and keyboard

This issue might occur if a mouse or trackpad button is pressed during startup. Make sure the button isn't pressed.

If the issue persists, shut down your Mac with its power button, disconnect any external mouse and keyboard, then turn on your Mac with its power button. If the flashing question mark issue persists, reconnect the keyboard and mouse.

Additional steps

If your Mac still starts to a flashing question mark, follow the steps below. If any step resolves the issue, you don't need to continue to the next one.

  1. Select your Mac OS X startup disk with Startup Manager by restarting and holding the Option key. After your Mac starts up, restart again to verify that the flashing question mark does not appear.
  2. If the issue persists, insert your Mac OS X installation disc. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc.

    MacBook Air note: On a MacBook Air, there are two options for starting up from Mac OS X media: Either connect a MacBook Air SuperDrive to the MacBook Air via the USB port and restart the computer, holding down the C key during startup, or use Remote Install Mac OS X to startup from a system software DVD that's located on a partner computer. Once started up from Mac OS X media, skip to step 3.

  3. Restart the computer, then hold the C key during startup.
  4. From the Utilities menu, choose Disk Utility. Don't click Continue.
  5. Select your Mac OS X disk (named "Macintosh HD" by default) in the left side of the Disk Utility window.
  6. Click the First Aid tab.
  7. Click Repair Disk to verify and repair any issues with your Mac OS X startup disk.
  8. After repairing the disk, try to start up normally.

    Important: If Disk Utility finds issues it cannot repair, you may need to back up as much of your data as possible (or use Time Machine to back up to a different disk), then erase the disk and reinstall Mac OS X. You should back up important files and data before erasing a drive. Erasing deletes everything on the hard disk (including things on your desktop). Also, you can install Mac OS X onto an external disk, start from the external disk, and use Migration Assistant to transfer items from your usual internal Mac OS X startup disk to the external disk, then erase the internal disk and reinstall Mac OS X.
  9. If the issue persists, and Disk Utility didn't find any irreparable issues, quit Disk Utility, quit the Installer, select your disk when prompted, and restart.
  10. If the issue continues, reset PRAM. Note: After resetting PRAM, if the computer starts up normally, reselect the startup disk in the Startup Disk preferences.
  11. If none of these steps resolve the issue, start up from the Mac OS X Installation disc and reinstall Mac OS X.

Try restarting your computer while holding down the X key. This may force the computer to start up using your Mac OS X system. If it does, release the X key, then open System Preferences and click Startup Disk. Make sure your Mac OS X system is selected. If you are unable to start up using the X key, restart your computer and immediately press and hold the Option key. Release the Option key when icons start to appear in the center of the screen. Select the Mac OS X system disk, then click the forward arrow to continue starting up.
If the above attempts to reselect your Mac OS X startup volume are unsuccessful, try resetting PRAM. Shut down your computer, then turn on the computer and immediately press and hold Command-Option-P-R until you hear the startup sound for the second time. Open System Preferences, click Startup Disk, and select your Mac OS X volume.
Hope this helps. If none of these options fix your problem, bring your computer to an Apple store, they are always very helpful and almost never fail to fix the problem!

I myself installed windows 7 in parallel with mac with out creating recovery disc for mac... Now my mac os crashed...M working with windows 7 nly.. Where an trackpad, webcam, n headfone serial ports not...


restart the computer. hold down the option key on the keyboard on reboot.
it will show a couple of icons select the Macintosh HD (ie the Mac operating system) it should booting the Mac operating system.
once you are up and running within the Mac OS go to Apple menu (apple icon, top left) > System Preferences > Startup Disk
Select the Macintosh Hard drive. this makes sure that after you reboot that it will boot into the Mac OS.

Hi. I turn on the mac and the screen says Mac OS X then there is Name and password. How can I get in to the main screen?


If you do not know the password for the user, you can reset it very easily:

  1. Start up from a Mac OS X Install disc (one whose version is closest to the version of Mac OS X installed). Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key. Or, put it in the computer and click the Install or Restore icon you see in the disc's main window (after which the computer will start from the disc without you needing to hold C). Or, you can use Startup Manager or the Startup Disk preference pane to select the Install disc.
  2. Choose a language, click the arrow button to continue,
  3. Mac OS X v10.6 or later: Choose Password Reset from the Utilities menu.
    Mac OS X v10.5 or v10.4: Choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu.
    Mac OS X v10.3: Choose Reset Password from the Installer menu.

    Tip: If you don't see this menu or menu choice, you're probably not started from the disc yet.

    Note
    : The default keyboard layout is U.S. English while started from the installation disc. If you use a keyboard layout other than U.S English, use the Input menu (the flag icon on the right side of the menu bar) to select the desired layout before typing a new password.
  4. Select your Mac OS X hard disk volume.
  5. Select the user name of your original administrator account.

    Important: Do not select "System Administrator (root)". This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal administrator account.

I just set up the password on my macbook to get rid of a network settings problem and now the computer is saying i am putting in the wrong password!!!! I powered off the computer and restarted thinking...
