Question about Whirlpool LER4634J Electric Dryer

Switch does not turn on.

When I press the switch to turn it on it does not turn the dryer on. You can hear the timer working on the timed dial but can not turn it on.

I believe this to be the motor is burned out or hopefully a wire is loose or burned in two. Make sure the breakers are reset and the connections are tight in the back.

How do I troubleshoot a problem with my dryer not starting?

Another person who's done most of their own legwork! I applaud you!

I could lean either way on this one. The start switch is obviously a lot easier to test - if it has more than two terminals, draw a little chart to represent the switch's terminals and measure all without the button depressed. Next, depress the button (you may have to tape it down for a little while, or coerce your wife into holding it down for you) while you go over your chart again, checking continuity between all the contacts. You're primarily looking for one "orphan" contact that never makes contact with anything else. The rest of the terminals should make some modicum of sense as you sketch in the continuities you find.

But... the timer could be at issue, too... especially if the dryer's getting old. It may not be completing the circuit to the motor. Fortunately, timer switches - even complicated ones - are fairly inexpensive at places like Grainger's.

Last... it's possible that the motor itself has bought a ticket south.

Dryer Does Not Tumble When Pressing Start

Hi,First of all check your door switch, make sure it is operational.If the door switch checks good, the start switch could be faulty, in newer dryers the start switch is built into the timer in older dryers your start switch may be separate, if you have to push on the timer dial to start the dryer, its built into the timer.

Check any other safety's that may be stuck open.Double check anyway. If it wont do anything, I would say its the door switch or the start switch.
Thank you

I have a Frigidaire dryer model FDE437GHS0 It has been working fine til this morning. If I turn the timer switch to time dry and push the start button it sounds like the timer is turning(or the gears are)...

IT SOUNDS LIKE THE TIMER IS BAD. IF THE TIMER MAKES NOISE IN ANY POSITION AND GRINDS THE LITTLE TIMER MOTOR OR THE TEETH ON THE MAIN GEAR IS SLIPPING

Dryer Won't Start

Make sure it has power. Then:Check the door switch. A little lever sticking down through top right of door opening. If it is not there you will need new door switch(sometimes the little lever breaks off). If it is there and does not click when you press it in you need a new door switch. if it clicks when you close the door then you have a bad thermal fuse.The thermal fuse is found by taking the back of the dryer off. The fuse is an oblong white plastic piece with 2 wires attached.

Starts automatically when I set the timer

This could be a problem with the start button switch (it should click when pressed/released) or with the switch on the motor.

I have a 5 year old Whirlpool Electric Dryer, Model #LER7648KT2. The Dryer won't start. I have checked the door switch, start button switch and visible thermo switches or thermostats with an ohm meter...

There are usually 2 thermal fuses in dryer circuits. One is on the heater housing and will blow in an overtemp condition around 310-350F.
The other is on the blower or exhaust housing and will blow around 200F
Make absolutely sure the 2nd one is continuous and not intermittently functional. This will definitely stop the motor from functioning

Below is a diagram for an older model (LER4634). Your dryer has some additional terminals probably because it has additional drying cycle options.

The diagram may be more readable when copied and pasted into a plain text editor such as Notepad or another editor with non-proportional fonts

Switch Terminals
|TM |TM |BK |BK |BK |
|WB |OR |BU |BU |R |
|-- |-- |V |-- |-- |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|O |X |O |X |X |Auto - High Heat
|O |X |X |X |X |Auto - Low Heat
|---|---|---|---|---|
|<> |<> |~ |X |O |Cool Down / Fluff
|O |X |O |O |O |End of Cycle
|---|---|---|---|---|
|X |O |O |X |X |Timed - High Heat
|X |O |X |X |X |Timed - Low Heat
|---|---|---|---|---|

Legend:
O = Open (Infinite Resistance)
X = Closed (Continuous)
<> = Either (But not Both)
~ = Doesn't Matter
NA = Not Applicable

Switch Terminals:

TM - Timer Motor (Different Models may use different colors)
WB - Black/White
OR - Orange
BK - Black
BU - Blue
V - Violet/Purple
R - Red

Example: For the Auto - High Heat Dry cycle, the following terminals are continuous:
Terminals
<TM - OR>
<BK - BU>
<BK - R>
(of course since BK-BU is continuous and BK-R is continuous, then BU-R is also continuous.

This should allow you to test at least some of the cycles your timer switch has

I have a general schematic in PDF for whirlpool for gas and electric, but did not see an option to add an attachment to this message.

Hope this helps or point you in the right direction.

Dryer wont start

if possible, with the door open, push the limit switch the door normally hits to let the drier know the door is shut. That switch may be bad.
