Question about Nintendo 64 Console

2 Answers

Hello, I bought a ram expander for my son's N64, turned the unit off, unplugged it, removed the jumper pak, installed the new expander, and nothing comes on the screen. I tried putting the jumper pak back in, and it doesn't work now, either. Does ANYONE know how I can troubleshoot this? We have tried moving the expander pack into different positions to get it exactly right, etc. following the unplugging rule each time, and nothing is working. Please help! Thanks!

I have the exact same problem. Was the RAM expander by Yobo Gameware?

My experience reads just the same. After replacing the jumper pack with the Ram expander, I never got sound or video again.

I had the same problem too. It was from Yobo. I just don't know how or what's going on!

I had the same exact thing happen to me! I'm glad it wasn't my fault.

By the way: There is NO WAY TO PLUG THIS THING IN THE WRONG WAY. It is a defective product and has DESTROYED my game console.

What does an expansion pack for the n64 do? what is its purpose? and are they interchangeable?

I will refer you to a page on Wikipedia that explains it -- but the simple explanation is that the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pack increases the RAM on the N64 from 4MB to 8MB. There were a few games with improved graphics and game play that REQUIRED the expansion pack.

Yes you can remove the Expansion Pak from one N64 and put it into another. However, your N64 will NOT work without either the Expansion Pak or the Jumper Pak in that slot. The original memory card that came in there was called the Jumper Pak which was 4MB. The Expansion Pak was 8MB.

I have an old N64 and to play majora's mask it says i need an expansion pak so i ordered an expansion pak but when i replaced the jumper pak with the expansion pak the system still turns on but for some...

If your Nintendo 64 console operates without error when the jumper pak is installed, but fails to function when the expansion pak is installed, by process of elimination this most likely means that the expansion pak you purchased is defective.

However, prior to purchasing another expansion pak (or attempting to exchange/get refunded for it), make sure the contact points on both the pak and the console slot are free of any dust, dirt, or other contaminants. Use a lint-free, dry cloth to do this. Water and/or cleaning products can further damage the system.

If, after cleaning the contacts, it still fails to function, seek an exchange or refund.

Does anything need to be conected to controller apart from lead to console, got someone staying dont know if they have forgotten any bits

AC Adapter to Console, to Wall.
AV Cable from Console to TV
Controller Lead into N64 system

That's it!

You also need to have a jumper pak [or ram expansion pak] in the system for it to work -- but no one should have removed it, so it should still be there.

My Nintendo 64 won't work after inserting a RAM expansion.

Use an official expansion pack, for ensured quality.

N64 and expansion pak whoas!

If your husband plugged it in without turning it off, the jumper pak, or the control deck itself is more than likely fried. Check and see if the control deck will work with the memory pak, instead of the jumper pak inside it. If not, the control deck is fried, and you'll need to buy another N64.

The ram expansion was probably it. I think he should just buy a new one and change the cases.

Too many variables to answer this yet. Where did the expansion pak come from? Was it new or used? Was a jumper pak in place and the console working before you installed the expansion pak? Did you unplug the console before removing the jumper pak and installing the expansion pak?

Nintendo 64 expansion pak

Barb3: The Jumper Pack (JP) is a bypass for the expansion cartridge. You were supposed to turn off the equipment remove the JP and then use the expansion cartridge. Your N64 Ram it's probably gone for good. Is either replace the RAM, which is hard to find or replace the N64. Sorry for that.... SithPitt
