I need to take the back off, and then will I see anything that tells me the SSB board or power/deflectiohn. I am sorry, I am not trying to be difficult, just I am frustrated around Xmas time and I can't afford to have a repair man. I am hoping I can do this, and with your help sounds like I can.

You said with christmas you are frustrated and cannot afford a repair person Thank God no one has my bad luck thanks to AT&T and there so called DSL my phone bill went from 43.00 a month to 1,682.00 so they cut off my business phone the one that is in yellow pages so furture customers could call, So now its like starting my shop all over again with no income to do anything,my bank sold to another one bouncing my checks and would not honor my 1,000.00 over draft then disability stopped my ssi ck the one i started my bussiness with because i surpossivly owe on old fine! Not only that i am behind on my rent all of my bills so it looks like after the 1st of 2009 I will be out of business and homeless ,When i started my business i drawed from SSI disability $452.00 amonth WELFARE and they never did any of the things they promised to do to help me under so called Pass to Work Program! If it had not been for the owner of my building letting me trade out work to paint it in exchange for rent i would not have made it at all! So there will be No Merry christmas or a Happy new year for me.Sorry about telling you all of this but justed had to tell someone. Income for this month $75.00 total.

RCA R61WH76 61 in. HDTV Television Red green line top screen

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem. If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured. You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Bowed red green lines at top screen. picture looks like it in 3d.

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D, wavy, or has a shadow or shadows
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

Picture looks like 3D without 3D glasses on???

The cost I don't know, but this can be fixed. I'd say shop around a bit. Make sure the repair person is certified for your TV's manufacturer. There are generally 3 lamps in projection T.V.'s, Red, Green, and Blue. They have to be aligned for the TV to project a clear picture. A credible TV repairman should be able to fix it. Depending on if it's new enough to be under warranty they may cover it as well. Really the only reason to get rid of it is if you want to get a new TV anyway. Depends on the cost of having the lamps aligned.
