Though we have cleaned the machine very thoroughly and the paddles work and move when the bowl is empty, once the flour mixture is in the machine, only one paddle is working and there is a constant clicking noise. Obviously, the loaf is not balanced and we lose some of each loaf. Is there a solution to the problem or do we call Black and Decker for replacement parts? Help!

Same problem - one paddle does not rotate as soon as there's any amount of resistance. It's the left one.

I also have the identical problem. The paddle on the right does not turn the moment the dough touches it. As soon as the dough is clear of the paddle it starts to rotate again. I contacted Black & Decker about this issue just before I checked this site. This is a nice machine otherwise.

Hi Tim,

I think this is a (hopefully warranty) repair issue

http://www.blackanddeckerappliances.com/customercare/contact-us.jsp

Get ahold of B&D, and let them handle this. There are no user-serviceable parts on this appliance, says so on the manual.

If I can be of further assistance, let me know. If this solves the issue, please rate it accordingly.

Thanks in-advance for using Fixya.com,

Jon

Bread not rising as it used to, not sure if problem with paddle or...?

just as a hint - there is few thousand breadmaker manufacturers... each of them is making several models... we do not live with you...

how we can help if we do not know what manufacturer and model?!? telepathy is overrated...

now, paddle have nothing to do with rise of the bread, yeast and temperature do! if paddle is mixing the dough - there is no problem with paddle!

buy pack of new yeasts (dry if you use dry, i prefer live ones), then try bake again, if bake is ok, you solved your problem, yeasts were old and enzymes stop working, if there is no change in results with new yeasts, try use same yeasts in different machine, if result is ok in different machine, you heating element is at fault... time for new machine...

you do not need to be super accurate with your baking, allow little play...

my favourite bread:
3.75 cup flour (non-bleached!)
1.75 cup milk (tepid, body temperature)
2 table spoon olive oil or butter
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3 sachets dry yeast (21g - 0.7oz) if live yeast - about golfball size

enjoy!

Took paddle off to clean but now can't get the paddle to rotate, help?

Add enough near boiling water to cover bottom. Wait 5 minutes. Drain off water. Add oil that you would use to make next loaf of bread. Rotate paddle back and forth to loosen up. I always add oil first to "lube" paddle shaft.

Kneading Paddle

All bread machines have a final "punch down" of the dough that lasts a few seconds before the final rise stage. When "punch down" is over that is when you can remove the dough ball, remove the paddle, set it aside and place the dough ball back in the pan. It usually helps to have your hands dusted with a little bit of flour.

How many pounds is xl bread

an xl loaf would be determined by the amount of flour you use. a standard 2lb large loaf is made usingc 560gms (19.7ozs)flour. i make my loaves using 850gms (30ozs) flour. the end result is an xxl loaf. (i don't bake it in the bread pan. i have an extra large loaf tin. one thing to note, is when using more flour all the other ingrediants apart from the yeast need to be increased too . good luck.

My chefmate breadmaker - The liquid and flour don't get mixed..

Hi,
Even though you hear the paddle moving, the belt may be slipping so the paddle does not rotate at full force. Please check the tension of the belt. You can access the motor, belt, pulley assembly inside the base of the machine. Also, please check to make sure the kneading cycle is run fully. Check the manual to see length of cycle. Good Luck...Hank

Every time I bake a wholemeal loaf, it bakes well enough, but it tapers off to one end. This problem does not seem to occur with white bread, which rises evenly throughout the length of the loaf.

Fast Action Easy Bake yeast is supposed to help with improving the volume of a loaf, but you can add 1/4 tsp of Vitamin C powder (ascorbic acid) to whole wheat loafs to improve the rise. Sometimes mixing the flours helps as a small amount of white (30%) can make the loaf less dense. Make sure you use the best quality flour you can afford - the cheap ones don't always make such a good loaf.

Bread does not rise

  • Make sure it is good quality Strong White Flour (not plain flour)
  • The amount of water you use is very important. Use scales for accurate results - 1ML = 1G for water
  • Make sure the yeast is as per instructions regards type/quantity/quality.
  • Double check that you are running the correct program.
  • Always put the yeast in first, as you dont want the water in contact with water
Having failed that I would return the machine

I have a problem with uneven shaped loaves

The paddles fit two ways, so what you must do is have them facing opposite ways, then they fight with each other and elongate the loaf
