There should be no loose or dried fool on dishes when put into dishwasher. The dishwasher pumps water out, but not all food particles will be pumped out each cycle. To check spray arms when washer is running open the door and observe arm position and close again then open again if arms have not moved far leave the door closed longer and see that it moves freely.
Replaced handle/latch unit. Killed power to the unit. Removed the inside door panel then unplugged the two switches on the latch. Removed old latch with broken handle (removing inside panel frees latch/handle). Installed new latch with handle reconnected the two switches, reinstalled inside door panel. Very simple. Note: Latches can be purchased with or without the handle. Less expensive to buy with the handle already installed on the latch.
Sounds like you have a control panel and/or control board issue. Normally when operator functions fail or "halfway" work the main control board, associated keypad, or wiring are the likely suspect. Now...another remote possibility could be the door latch not closing properly. However, this would affect ALL functions. I hope this helps you.
You need to remove the lower spray arm (the little plastic nut in the middle of the arm can be removed with a 3/8" nut driver), then the dome housing, then the impeller, then the entire cover. This gets you down to the motor where the chopper blade is at. There's probably something hard that's getting in the blade. If you don't find anything, you'll need to replace the motor and the seal kit, which includes the blade and the seal that does not come with the motor.
