If you have a virus on your computer chances are good that is the cause. If you can remove the virus by using symantec or something similar. I think the first thing to do is try to boot using a boot disk and possibly delete everything and start over with a fresh install.

Computor shuts down every 3 min and logs me out

Do you get any message on screen when this happens? I would suspect a virus infection.

Try starting the system in "safe-mode" and running scans with your antivirus software to remove any infections.

My computer is acting strange, it is constanly freezing and i am constanly having to restart it. it is very very slow also. will resetting it to factory settings fix this, if so how do i do it?

if the problem is a software related one, then it's better if you first go through some best practices for ensuring PC security from virus and malware infection. See if this solves the problem. Usually going through these best practices will solve any slowdowns or freezeups... of course, assuming these freezeups aren't a result of a program you recently installed. If you can pinpoint the time when your computer became unstable, and this coincides with a program you installed, then you'll have to uninstall the program and that should solve your freezeups problem.
If it doesn't, you may be facing a FSB controller chip failure, that controls the work of the PC. See if your laptop has some symptoms of motherboard failure due to FSB chip issues.
The motherboard repair is the last option, so make sure you eliminate the software potential problems like virus infections or any programs and updates you recently installed.

The monitor comes on each time but then goes dark after a few seconds

i think u r using window 7 or vista.
this happens when ur system is infected by virus.
so, you may try this trick....

Note:- If you have multiple user accounts or your account is password protected then start from Step-1 else skip Step-1 and Directly follow step-2 instructon

***** Step-1 ****
press ::
ctrl + shift + esc
or
ctrl +alt+ delele

then you will see a screen containing some menu such as "Start Task Manger", "Switch User" etc....
if u have ur account password protected... then select "Switch user"...Enter password and press enter..

if again screen become black,,,
then do step 2

***** Step-2 ****
press ::
ctrl + shift + esc
or
ctrl +alt+ delele

select "Start Task manager". then do this: File>New Task(Run..)
Type this coomand:

explorer.exe
and click Ok.

Now u can back up your important data and files.
Install new windows operating system if Anti virus fails to Detect the virus and fails to repair the system.

My acer turns off as soon as it turns on. I changed the battery and now it stays on but the screen is black and the light for the motherboard does not light up ?? nothing happens

Check status of your grab loader,it may be due to grab loader failure.
Also check the ststus of your windows, they might have corrupted.
Also scan your system for virus infection.
Due to virus infection, fan speed might have gone changed, which can lead to overheating and rise the processor temp.
Hence check your fan speed and processor temp also through BIOS.
You can control fan speed through BIOS.

Was on web site when screen froze. I turned off

i would firstly disconnect from the net and delete the temp memory .
after that run a scan on your computer as your PC is infected and even with a virus protection infection do happen .
run the scan , make sure you have an up to date virus protection .
try also to press the following keys :
control , alt and delete in that order and see the task manager appearing .
have a good look at what is running which will give you an indication to what is running program wise .
if your PC does not run at all you have a more serious problem .
you may have to make sure that all your connections are ok ,
without knowing how and what happen i can only make up that your PC has crached the only fan running is the cooling fan for your power supply .

Information about virus.

The CIH virus infects executable files and is spread by executing an infected file. Since many files are executed during normal use of a computer, the CIH virus can infect many files quickly.
There are several variants of the CIH virus. Some activate every month on the 26th, while other variants activate just on April 26th or June 26th. Once the CIH virus activates, the virus attempts to erase the entire hard drive and to overwrite the system BIOS. Some machines may require a new BIOS chip to recover if overwritten by the CIH virus. CIH only affects Win95/98 machines.
More technical details about the CIH virus can be found at the following site.

Computer is infected with viruses

Blue screens as a result of infection mean the virus has corrupted the operating system. You can fix it by doing an operating system repair with your recovery or operating system disc. Depending on the virus, this may only be a temporary fix. If this turns out to be a temporary fix, then the sure way to fix it is to completely wipe the hard drive, completely reformat using NTFS, and reload the operating system, which I would recommend. If you have any problems during or after the reload, then the virus damaged the hard drive and it will need to be replaced.
