My door is not opening or closing either. I removed the opener cover. There is a plastic gear, about 2" in diameter that isn't being engaged. There was a lot of plastic in the bottom of the case. I wondered if the shavings from the gear occured over time or just recenlty. Also, the motor is turning in one direction but not the other.

We had a big snow and the safety feature would make the door open once it reached the bottom. I cleared all the snow away and even checked the black sensors on ground. I had to use the red cord to open and close it. Now when I push the garage door opener it makes the sound like it is closing/opening but the door doesn't move. I pushed the square button on back of the unit but nothing happened. Help!!!! My home is only three years old.

DOOR TRIES TO OPEN AND CLOSE BUT STOPS AFTER ABOUT 6 INCHES THEN JUST MAKES NOISE.

  • chrishall8 Jan 01, 2009

Just like you said. The opener has electricity, and it struggles, but it cannot lift the door. I adjusted the switch to maximum power, but still no activity.

I had the same problem, mine was just the white Sprocket assembly, it stands straight up, there is another one which is the Worm gear, mine was fine. I read on some other post, when you take off the panel, and if you see a lot of white dust (shredded white plastic) then its the gear. Went to Sears warehouse, had the part in stock and replaced it myself. Had to just unbolt the Sprocket assembly from inside (3 bolts), pull out from the top, a little hassel, but got it done. Follow the instructions and you will be fine. Remember after greasing up the sprocket like it says too, take the time to use some silcone spray on the springs and rollers, a lot of people forget to do this, even me...

It sounds like the nylon gear attached to the motor has broken, this is actually a very common problem with these openers. Take the receipt into a sears and they should give you the nylon gear, it does look like plastic, a lot cheaper to manufacture, but the cold weather and repetitious opening and closing the motor does really wears on it.

Linear garage door opens and closes when close to unit about 10 '

when the door stops moving when going down, pull the emergency release handle on the door and then push the door closed by hand. Once it's closed push the emergency handle back so it engages the chain. Open the door and close it a few times to make sure it closes all the way with the motor.

My Lift Master garage door will not close. It makes the closing noise but the door does not slide down. Whcan I talk to to fix this?

Sounds like you have a chain drive garage door opener and you hear a humming sound when you push the wall console. The motor is running but the chain does not move. You need to replace the gear & sprocket assembly.

Sears garage door opener model 139.53919

The torsion springs might need adjustment.

Pull emergency release, and manually lift door to half-open position.

When you release the door, it should stay in place.
If it almost "slams" down, the springs are not doing their job to "balance" the weight of the door itself.
The opener isn't designed to overcome the weight of the unsupported (no spring assist) door.

Over time, the springs take a "set", and might need a readjustment
THIS IS A JOB FOR PROFESSIONALS!!!
The springs are under tremendous pressure loading, and can even kill someone if they do not know what they are doing!

Garage door opens about 4 inches, stops, then goes back down. No flashing lights at all. One sensor light is green, the other is a steady yellow. What's the issue?

something may be obstructing the door, so pull the red emergency release handle and try to pull the door manually.if you cant move it manually, call for professional help

make sure all snow and debris are clear of the area where the door closes

if there are no obstructions, manually set the adjustment controls on the back side of the opener panel. weather can sometimes change the amount of force needed to open/close. adjust the setting with a screwdriver to no more than 260 degrees, about 3/4 of a turn

Can't reattach the door to the trolley and grinding noise, won't move

Pull straight down on the rope and release. Then you should be able to run the opener and the two halves of the trolley will click together. Sometimes you need move the door by hand to get this done. The grinding noise is most likely the drive gear stripping. Remove the cover from the motor unit and it should be obvious.

Chamberlain Garage - Used Release to open garage

To make sure the trolley will engage properly pull straight down on the rope and release. Then you can either run the opener or move the door by hand. One way or the other it should connect for you.

Sears Craftsman Garage door opener does not open or close

The drive gear is most likely stripped. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. The parts number is 41A2817 and is available from Sears or any good door opener service company. It comes with instructions.
