Wanna change my defalt media player

I have windows xp and it has windows media player , and I dont like it because it doesnt play avi files all that well (its very selective). so I installed the VLC media player that is very productive to say the least. I wanna make the VLC media player my default player and use anything else at my discretion, any suggestions on how to do this would be helpful thanks ?

If really never pops up, i.e. any menus when you place the mouse pointer over any file you should get a list of options, with a multimedia type file with a .avi extension there should be Play and in Bold lettering as the top of the list option further down you should see Open With that when pointer over it should have a drop down arrow, meaning more options under that menu as in Sub Menu and there you will see a list of Players if more than just Windows Media Player PLUS a choice to Choose a Program of you're choice "That is if any, installed on you're Computer" Program Folder. If you can't see them menus choice as you right click on ANY file than something serious is wrong with your system, no offence. But yeah I to use VLC Player as do many of my friends, BUT you do not have go with that one there are many others out there that will play .avi files some have different codecs, if so WMP should also play it ONCE you have Update it's codecs.

Well M8, fist of all, mediaplayer plays avi-files:) you just need to uppdate the codes on it.
But if you want VLC to play all your files, i like VLC to, that easy done.
select an avi file, rightclick on it, select OPEN WHIT, select VLC and mark the little square that asks if you want the all similar files should be open with VLC.
Then do the same on every other media format you want your to start in VLC, not all the files, just one of each format. Dnt forget to mark the square in every one you change.

Good luck to you!

Check that the file being played has one of these file extensions. If not, then the file isn't played by windows media player.
Extensions: asf, .asx, .avi, .wav, .wma, .wax, .wm, .wmv, .wvx, .ra, .ram, .rm, .rmm, .mpg, .mpeg,

I am not been able to play themovie on window media player that i have downloaded from the net

Most movies saved on the servers online are not compatible with windows media player since they are uploaded in different formats to decrease size and decrease uploading time. Common files like Mp4, .avi, rmvb, .mkv, etc....

If you want them to play using the windows media player, you'll need codecs like Klitemega codec packs, acemegacodec packs. You can download Klite Mega codec Packs here. Download and install it, then restart your system and try playing the download movies.

If this doesn't help, you better use a player like Vlc Media player, (click here to download), Install and run, you will be able to play any type of media using this player.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.
