Ice building up in bottom of freezer of side by side MSD27 Maytag

This appears to be likely but at the rate that ice is building up, it would overflow the pan in less than a week. We do not have a drain attachment in the back of the fridge that can go to sewer, so my guess is that the drain is plugged and that there is a leak in the ice maker. If the drain were not plugged, water would be pooling up on the floor which is not a solution.

    Thanks

So the evaporation rate in the pan is greater than the defrost drip volume. But we get 1.5 inches of ice buildup in the bottom in 2 days. The evaporation rate in the pan can accomodate this?

I have cleared the drain. Do not know what was causing the pluggage but I pulled the fridge out and wiggled/squeezed the rubber boot just below the drain. Flushed about 15 oz of hot water after the pluggage was cleared. I guess the next step is to put everything back together and see if it worked. I'll provide update in a few days.

    Thanks for the help.

Were is the Defrost drain tube located on a MS2758DR ?

  • sooooooooooo Dec 31, 2008

Yep. It worked. No more ice in the bottom.

But now it appears that I have a bad relay on the compressor or the compressor is going bad. The fridge quit cooling so I checked the defroster to see if it was running to long. I unplugged it and it still did not cool. I checked the back and the comprossor was clicking, humming for 5 seconds, and clicking again. It would do this routine every minute or so. I tapped/wiggled (pretty hard until it sparked) and the compressor started running again and it started cooling and icing on the coils in the freezer compartment. But he compressor is very very hot. Is this normal?

I have had the same problem with my Matag side-by side and repeated the thaw/cleanout procedure several times. I remove the back panel inside the freezer compartment, thaw the ice that has built up and overflows the pan at the base of the coils, pour hot water into the pan until it drains freely; put everything back together and within 2 weeks it is all iced up again. It seems that the condensation is freezing in the pan before it makes it to the drain. Any suggestions?

Your defrost drain tube is clogged up. Remove the ice and look for the top of a drain tube about 3/8-1/2" in diameter. Once the ice is gone, use a meat baster (turkey baster) full off hot water stuck in the top of the drain tube and blast hot water through to clean it out. Do this several times with about 4 cups of hot water so you don't over flow the drain pan and flood the floor

What happens is that the defrost water can't get from the bottom of the evaporator (cooling coils) inside the freezer to the defrost drain pan. Normally, once the water is in the drain pan, it evaporates. It doesn't have anything to do with your sewer

Yep... with the heat from the compressor and condensor plus the condenser fan blowing air it doesn't take long to evaporate out of the pan

Let us know... usually the blockage is scummy stuff that builds up (actually grows as it is a type of fungus) because it is in a warm and wet environment down below

Maytag side by side msd264rheb freezer works frig isn't cold. We found ice on bottom freezer side and did melt it with a hair dryer. Frig vent is letting in, now a little cool air, but not a lot.

If you found ice in the freezer then there is usually a lot more behind the back plate. If you let it defrost completely it should work good for a couple days until the ice builds up again. you more than likely have a deefrost issue. There are usually nthree components in a typical defrost circiut. The heater, defrost thermostat and a defrost timer or control. one or those is bad.

its most likely ice build up, if this is a bottom freezer type. It could still be ice on the fan even if its a top freezer or side freezer. that's where I would look first.

Sounds like the drainage hole is blocked with ice, i normally take the back cover off the freezer and at the bottom you will see a build up of ice at the bottom, turn freezer off and carefully remove as much ice as you can, then pour some boiling water over the excess ice and in the middle you will see a drain hole make sure water then freely flows down drain hole. Other than that you could try switching your freezer off for 24 hours to clear ice.
