We bought the freezer used and have had it for about three years. The freezer is running and the food is still frozen, but what little bit of frost that is on the inside walls is defrosting. There is no water inside the freezer.

IF NOT THE THE DEFROST TIMER YOUR DEFROST HEATER OR DEFROST TERMINATOR IS BAD,REMOVE BACK PANEL INSIDE THE FREEZER YOU WILL SEE A LONG SINGLE OR DOULE POLE SHAFT THIS IS YOUR HEAT REMOVE BOTH LEADS ONE ON EACH END PUT YOUR VOLT METER ON OMES AND PUT ONE LEAD ON EACH END IF YOU GET ANY KIND OF READING YOUR HEATER IS STILL GOOD AND THE LITTLE ROUND CLIP ON TERMANATOR IS BAD, IF NO READING THE HEATER IT IS BAD,REPLACE-GET THE MODEL NUMBER INSIDE FREEZER AND GO TO LOCAL APPLIANCE PARTS STORE TO GET HEATER-REPLACE AND PUT BACK TOFETHER AND YOU SHOULD BE GOOD TO GO,ALSO MAKE SURE THE FREEZER FAN IS NOT STUCK AND TURNING,IF NOT TURNING SPIN IT WITH YOUR FINGER AND SEE IF YOU CAN GET IT GOING AGAIN,LET ME KNOW

do you have voltage at the compressor? if not you have an open circuit or bad t-stat. if voltage is present and compressor is not running you have a bad start device or bad compessor. if voltage present and compressor runs you have a refrigeration issue get a new freezer.
SOURCE: My freezer's defrost systems runs constantly
i dont think so i would look at the compressor kicking out on thermal overload or a faulty thermostat thermostats have two settings cut in cut out your cut in could be bad and not turning the compressor on till the temp reaches melting temps now if your hearing a click buzz then you need to look at the compressor and make sure the compressor fan is running but its not a defrost promblem

Not much you can do except ensure you have a tight seal and not to open it more than you have to.
