When vacuum is upright there is no suction in lower part of unit. When handle is lowered for vacuuming, suction is redirected to lower part and beater bar should start turning. I called Dyson and rep there was very helpful in assisting me however she ultimately referred me to factory authorized repair center in my area who was able to effect repairs. If you call Dyson you'll need the unit serial #(they can tell you where it is on the machine if you don't know)and if you purchased the unit less than two years ago it is under factory warranty and Dyson will pay for repairs. If you didn't fill out and send in warranty card when you purchased vacuum they will take you at your word concerning date of purchase. good Luck

I have finally fixed my sister's dyson dc 15 beater bar problem. It was just 2 tiny broken wires connect to circuit board lead to the beater bar. The wires broke where they go through the black rubber gommet. You need a torx screwdriver tx 15 to remove 2 plastic covers to access the wires. When looking at the front of the vacuum, the gray covers located on the right side of the vacuum. 1 big cover with a black rubber gasket and other small gray cover is on the rotating ball area.
This my new year resolution is to warn people not to buy Dyson vacuum cleaner ( Junk) design to break down! Shame on you Dyson!!!! Save your money find good old vacuum cleaner with metal parts.

OLD IS IN NEW IS JUNK!

Happy New Year!

I replaced the very thin wires (#18 or smaller) and gromet with some #16 "Monster" speaker wire in jacket I had left over from wiring a media room. The cable is almost the size of the power cable on the Dyson and the jacket will protect the wires. 2 crimp on connectors on each end and the fix was done. Thank you very much for leading me in the correct direction.

You need a new belt and maybe a new brushbar.

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

The brush control is designed to switch the brush bar off automatically when you stand the machine back into the upright position. It is designed this way to protect any delicate floor surfaces when you have the machine switched on and upright and when you are using the hose.

If the brush control should be in the centre position and move forward to the "on" position when you release the head. If it is not doing this, please contact our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Kind regards
Darran

No suction when using the hose.

The beater bar is supposed to stop when the vac is upright. Sounds like you have a clog. There are several access points to check, fairly easy to clear obstructions.

My beater bar will not spin when the handle is lowered? But there's suction thru the hose when the handles upright

The motor that spins the beater bar is connected to a tiny switch, if that switch is not operating that could be the problem. If the motor is not spinning, that could be your problem (seized), or if you have a broken belt that could be your problem.

Hope this helps

Suction loss when handle is tipped back to clean carpet

can any one help,
Our Dyson Animal vacuum has plenty of suction when it is upright and the attachments are being used off the hose, but when the handle is tipped back to begin cleaning carpets the beater head is getting no suction. As the handle is being tipped back you can hear what sounds like a flapper valve in the body of the vacuum opening and then all the suction just goes away.

No suction in upright position

Check the adapters at the bottom. They're supposed to move cleanly when you lower the handle. It's pretty obvious if there's an air gap when you lower the handle, and you should hear the suction in the air gap.

And...call Dyson...their support is great!
