My tank is 3/4 full and I hate to waste all that ink. So far I do not have a solution.

  • gspren Dec 20, 2008

Actually, none of those possibilities worked in my case. I have found out that possibly the tank has gone bad. Thank you for your comments though.

Hi Sharon,
These are the possibilities:-
1. The ink has leaked inside and not letting the circuitry to respond properly-For solving this take out the tank and clean it , if possible check for leakage inside the printer and clean that also
2. Ink tank is empty you have to change it.
3. The firmware inside the printer has gone bad and need to be reloaded/repaired by a qualified technician.
Please rate me appropriately if you are satisfied with my answer,in case, if you want any clarification please get back to me.

You can have above said ink tank just to confirm the installed one and in near future printer would require it.

Check the ink tank contacts and clean the connector, if there is ink on them, that can be the cause for the error message.

Try cleaning the connectors on the printer carriage, if this does not help it is because the 5 PGBKchip had been reset, and you need to replace it with an original cartridge.

Unfortunately many manufacturer do this to stop the distribution of other brand cartridges.

When that happen there is still ink inside, you need to use a chip resetter on the ink tank to have it working again.

Getting error U043 "The following ink tank cannot be recognized. I have the correct tank. Pixma 520 ...tank # 5 PGBK

Hi,

The little chips on the front of the cartridge create a trouble for people trying to refill the cartridge, as of right now, there is no way to easily reset the chips. If you refill them, they still register as empty, and therefore don't work.

If the following tips doesn’t help, you can try to install the original new ink cartridge following the instructions in the user manual. This can solve the problem.
Note :
Be sure to install the ink tanks in the correct order indicated by the label on the Print Head Holder. The machine will not print if an ink tank is installed in the incorrect position.
For information on the compatible ink tanks, refer to the back cover of the Quick Start Guide.
Tips before Replacing Ink Tanks : Important:
- To maintain optimal printing quality, we recommend the use of specified Canon brand ink tanks.
Refilling ink is not recommended.

- Once you remove an ink tank, replace it immediately. Do not leave the machine with ink tanks removed.
- Replace empty tanks with new ones. Inserting partially used ink tanks may cause the nozzles to clog. Furthermore, with such tanks, the machine will not be able to inform you when to replace the tanks properly.
- Once an ink tank has been installed, do not remove it from the machine and leave it out in the open. This will cause the ink tank to dry out, and the machine may not operate properly when it is reinstalled. To maintain optimal printing quality, use an ink tank within six months of first use.
- Color ink may be consumed even when printing a black-and-white document or when black-and-white printing is specified.
Color ink is also consumed in Print Head Cleaning and Print Head Deep Cleaning, which may be necessary to maintain the machine's performance. When an ink tank is out of ink, replace it immediately with a new one.

After replacing ink tank;
Turn off the machine, and unplug the power cord of the machine from the power supply. After five minutes or more, plug the power cord of the machine back in, and then turn on the machine.

If you would like to vote for the answer, this will help the others to see the similar problems solved and also will be a satisfaction factor for me to continue helping you.
All the best.

Canon MX850. Print blank after ink changes. The black ink, PGBK-5, ran out so I replaced it with a cheap generic ink tank. But it didn't work, nothing print, not even color copy. I thought the ink is bad...

That is a common problem on all Canon printers, the purge assembly on the right where the printhead parks, has a pump inside and hoses that go to the filters and ink absorbers. When that unit goes out you need a replacement. A job best done in a shop. When the printhead is not cleaned and primed properly you get blank pages no matter how full the inks are.

How do I direct my Canon ip4300 Printer to no longer print from the normal black 5BGBK cartridge (empty) but to print from the 8BK (full)

You can't because CLI-8Bk ink cartridge is use only for photo printing. For text, document or gray scale printing the printer use PGI-5Bk.You need to replace your empty PGI-5Bk.

Black ink

The PGBK cartridge is a pigment black ink, while the others use a dye for coloration. The pigment black is used when printing text and other documents. The dye ink is used when printing photos and other colored documents. The dye black is used in conjunction with the color (dye) inks to provide tinting and color gradation, and therefore is not used nearly as much as the pigment black unless you use your printer only for printing photos.

If you're printing text and documents, you will need to buy another pigment black (PGBK) cartridge.
